NOT a troll/bait thread just a retrospective on JMM-Pacquiao 1 (a fight which I believe Pacquiao won CLEARLY with the massive 10-6 first round).
Everyone mentions how explosive the 1st round was but the 3rd and final knockdown has two different dynamics to it that I've never heard mentioned.
First, Pacquiao clearly and deliberately hit Marquez AFTER he was down. Marquez left hand was on the canvas his right had clinging to the rope; Pacquiao stopped for a moment and decided to still smash him with an illegal straight left hand. Joe Cortez (confused as usual) said and did absolutely nothing, and Jim Lampley and the HBO crew didn't make a peep about it. This was at least as bad as what got RJJ DQ'd against Griffin if not worse
On the flipside after Marquez got hit with the illegal blow he fell back on the canvas and laid himself flat as if the fight was over. He had both gloves covering his face like he was done and by the way he sprung back to his feet I think he was surprised that Joe Cortez was even giving a count. I strongly believe that either Marquez thought Cortez was going to call the fight off at the moment because of the all the knockdowns, or that for a quick second he was trying to look more hurt than he actually was in order to get a point deduction or possibly a DQ victory after the illegal punch by Pacquiao.
In my opinion Pacquiao deserved a 1 point deduction for that. If everything else remained the same on the judge's scorecard JMM would have won by a split decision.
Thoughts?
I've always said that Cortez ineptitude is what made this rivalry. I think most refs would have stopped the fight after seeing Marquez lay back like that. Lucky for us, Cortez is a terrible ref.

I agree, there should have been a point deduction but on my cards, Pac woulda still won.
Did JMM want to quit? Was he expecting the fight to be called off? I think so too, he cleraly lay back quite comfortable, thing is he did get back up when he realised the ref was cortez lol
No way Manny should have been DQ'd.
It's the sport of boxing... the hurt business, not some tickling contest.
Fighters are instructed to "protect themselves at all times"... Marquez should have been protecting himself at that moment when Pacquiao threw that punch.
If that were Victor Ortiz in place of Marquez, we all know Victor would have clearly protected himself by reaching out and hugging Pacquiao.
Memo has done wonders with Acne-MArquez. This dude was getting knocked down easily. Even katsidis Knocked this dude out.
"Knocked out"?? katsidis was stopped by Marquez? Do you mean knocked down?? Marquez gets knocked down often because he really sits down on his counters and likes to engage in close (and sometimes you pay the price). But if you can take a shot--then why not sit in pocket and risk it
Marquez has never been stopped by anyone.
what a bunch of bull Manny did know he was on the ground . he was looking straight down at him. The video speaks for itself you guys are nothing but nutjobs
Not from Manny's angle.
Go check what you saw of Marquez touching the canvas when Manny hit Marquez? It's clearer with a replay of what happened but that was not available to Manny nor the ref in the heat of the moment.
Floyd touched the canvas against Zab Judah. Ref saw nothing. Why? It happened fast and due to the ref's positioning (angle) on the play. It is what it is.
BTW - There are Floyd incidences where the ref could have definitely DQed Floyd .... but that can be discussed on another day.
My thoughts are Marquez has no quit in him and Pacquiao is a clean fighter. A draw was a reasonable ending for this great fight between two great fighters. A Marquez win or a Pacquiao win would also be OK as long as the scoring was very close. If Pacquiao deliberately hit him when he was down a point deducted would be more appropriate than a DQ which I think is over kill and was over kill in Roy Jones' DQ loss as well.
Since nobody said anything kinda answers the question.
From Manny's angle, Marquez was not on the floor. He was hanging from the ropes and had 1 hand supporting him. So Manny clocked him.
If you look from another angle, one can tell.

Mayweather hits a guy who threw a cheap headbutt and its a sucker punch. Pacquiao hits a downed opponent and its ok :smh:
logic goes out the window with Pac fanatics
Everyone on this site would have KTFO of anyone who blatantly head butted them and snuck in a shot after
Pacquaio hit the guy when he was down....he should have been deducted a point. It was clear as day that JMM was down.
I wouldn't have dq'ed him because Manny was kinda caught in the moment
How times have changed. Fast forward to 2010, Manny begging the referee to stop the fight so that he would not accidentally kill the biggest man he's ever fought.
Lol, even at threads like this floydiots floydgimps and floydnutsackers wanna call the ****ing punch a dq what a bunch of morons :bottle::bottle::bottle:. it was just a conincidence and unintentional, you floyd worshippers are the worst!
You're funny.
Pacquiao stopped hopping around and looked at him for a split second than gave him the lethal left. He knew he was down, he just got caught up in the moment. Be fair.
It still shocks me how no one said jack sh*t, not even JMM's corner said anything from what I remember of the broadcast..

nah, it was a heat of the moment thing and pacquiao wasn't sure as marquez wasn't down all the way, it's not like mayweather who sees a vulnerable opponent, and always jumps him, he has a history of it
look at him stopping and recognizing that corrales was down and vulnerable, thus like in his nature, he strikes him illegally
give it bro, you making pacquaio look bad lmfao.
I am a pacquaio fan but what you said about Mayweather in that instance is the exact same thing he did to Marquez in the first bout lol.

Marquez laying flat whilst covering his face was frustration taking over, could have been a grave mistake on Marquez' part but luckily Cortez let it continue.

He wasn't trying to quit, he did it in hopes Cortez would not rule it a knock down. I thought it was funny and when he noticed that Cortez kept counting he jumped right up like nothing happened. Marquez the troll
Marquez was either milking it as well but then realized Cortez was having nothing of it and sprang back up, or thought the fight was over at that point after being knocked down for the 3rd time. I go back and forth on that one.
That's an interesting question. Bound to be some interviews with Marquez where he addresses that. I'm sure he'd reject any suggestion that he thought he was done, but it did sort of look like it. Would he have risked trying to milk the late punch in a moment like that?
He got seriously lucky with Cortez. Nine times out of ten that fight is stopped.
I actually had Pac winning the first fight, a draw the second fight, Marquez winning the 3rd fight and we all know how 4 turned out but no matter how they turned out, lets be glad we had 4 epic wars between 2 great warriors.
You don't DQ a fighter for that. You warn, and at most take a point. It's more of a conversation if Marquez didn't get up, but I'd stand by that.
And Marquez didn't quit, he took a moment to collect himself. I wish more referees gave fighters the benefit of the doubt in that scenario.
I have a better question for you. Should the judge who "claims" he miscalculated the 10-6 round, have been DQ'ed???
Absolutely.
Some of these threads are petty and make no sense.
It's an interesting part of a classic fight. Sorry it bothered you so much. There's plenty of quality non-petty posts in the Floyd-Manny master thread though. Maybe you'd enjoy yourself more there. :cool2:
