Thinking of May-Pac coming up, do you think casuals will notice that there are three world championship belts to declare one winner? Or do they just take the fight for what its advertised as and not looking into the finer details?
I remember when I first heard terms like "Undisputed Heavyweight Champion," I used to think they just added Undisputed because he fought his way through the rankings.
It just grinds my gears when people are convinced Algieri belonged in the ring with Pacquiao or that Leo Santa Cruz is "the" (WBC) Super Bantamweight Champion of the world according to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
Leo Santa Cruz(WBC), Carl Frampton(IBF) and Guillermo Rigondeaux(WBA) all have legit claims to being called Super Bantamweight Champion of the world, so not sure what the beef is.
I'm just saying I heard this argument before... Idk if you're a stan or a boxing fan... but if youre justifying Ortiz over a belt... then you must be a stan because Chris had a belt... 140... but still a belt... and we don't even give a s.hit about belts anyways...
I didn't know Pacquiao fought Algieri for the 140 WBO Light Welterweight title. That's new to me.
Floyd fought Ortiz for the belt.. Floyd wasn't a champion at the time. If we don't care about belts then Floyd shouldn't of needed to fight Ortiz, but wait he knows he needs the belt to attract the newcomers and casuals. Which is my original topic of this thread which you strayed away from and started making accusations about how I justify fights.
Manny cherry picked Algieri and made him come up in weight.
Every fight is a different situation so I don't see what you're grasping at here, if you think the way I agree that one fight is justified is also a means of justifying other fights for even similar reasons you're completely wrong.
This is true, even when I explain boxing to friends its a bit rough because you can see, especially major sports fans, really want to believe they know what they're talking about in boxing. It's just that they have no clue some of the time.
What are you trying to get at? Hope you're not trying to point something out in me. You mean to say there weren't better/more challenging options for either man? Guerrero definitely didn't belong in that ring, but Ortiz had a belt that Floyd wanted.

I would say most casual fans don't notice and don't care. I remember explaining to someone how the Wilder/Stiverne fight didn't actually determine who the best Heavyweight in the world was...by their logic, they heard World Championship fight, and the took it at face value. It's one of the aspects of this sport which is so interesting: if every title fight matters, and you have anywhere from 4 to 32 title fights in each weight class per year, how can any of them truly be significant?
It doesn't take long for casual fans to clock on to the discrepancy, and realize that at any given weight class there is one true champion and a few pretenders, and as boxing has become something of a niche sport, I guess the significance of casual fans has diminished.
That is why I gamble on boxing, that sort of knowledge can make you money if you are patient and get your money in on the spots you want.
That is one of the major hurdles boxing still has, even with more TV exposure it still takes a ton of effort to actually know boxing. Another issue is boxing fans are kind of jerks, because if you spend the time to know all this stuff it is hard to talk to someone that hasn't and not come off strong.

Do you believe Guerrero or Ortiz belonged in the ring with Mayweather? All 3 came off good wins... the only difference is Chris moved up in weight to fight Pac, but hey so did JMM when he fought Floyd...

Yes and no, I think anyone who watches a bit of boxing knows about the belt deal but knowing the real deal with it is a totally different matter.
I think most casual fans just accept fights though, if they get further into the sport they start looking deeper. That is what really separate out casual fans from hardcores, knowing the details and I mean like every detail.

I'm pretty sure they don't. I don't even pay attention who holds these belts. I judge by my eyes who I feel is the best in the division. I have no clue who holds what belt. Even my favorite fighters I don't know what belt they have nor do I care.
Lol same here.
