Which boxers could have been mentioned as one of the greatest boxers of all time, but for one reason or another they didn't make it to that level of acclaim?
I guess first one springs to mind is Prince Naseem Hamed, he had extraordinary talent early on in his career but he was let down by his training ethos and ego - eventually he became too complacent and undedicated to perform anywhere close to his potential as we saw in the Barrera fight where he hardly trained at all for what was the biggest fight of his career. By the time that fight came around, Naseem assumed he was so naturally gifted and superior that he didn't even need to train as often as other pro-athletes - Emanuel Steward quit his role as trainer of Naz for this very reason.
Which other fighters didn't quite reach the level of greatness they could have and why didn't they make it?
Don't know if he has been mentioned yet, but Freddie Pendleton Jr. is one imo. The guy had big social anxiety issues but when he showed up mentally right, nobody was going to beat him.
Ike Ibeabuchi
This is one dude that you actually get pissed at if he didn't have so many mental problems. What a beast he was in the ring. I personally thought nobody could beat him.
The first time I saw him he was saying that his name was the President in the squeeky voice for a big dude but he made me a believer with his fights
Prince Naseem Hamed
Michael Nunn
Salvador Sanchez
Mike tyson is an atg lol stop being saddos
Floyd & Manny are both arguably atg, clear best fighters in my generation
Naseem Hamed is without a doubt the best option in a thread. He had more talent than just about every other guy mentioned here and that power, I've never seen a fw in my generation that hit so hard and was such a devastating finisher. Then there was those reflexes, so quick he rarely got hit in his early years but had a good enough chin a nd powers of recuperation to come back.
Sadly his training regimen was a joke.
Ike Ibeabuchi looked to be a rising star in the division in the late 90s but didn't reach his full potential because of a jail sentence for a rape conviction.
The problem with Byrd was that he was a blown up super middleweight. I always wondered what he could have done if he moved up one division at a time.
fool was 6 ft 210 though. he fought ams at 165 but was fighting at cruiser and up pretty much from start at pro.
i think he liked the speed advantage he had at heavy.
byrd had speed, skills and a good chin. just a little power and he could have been special.
David Tua, that is definitely a name I can get behind. What a terrifying guy in his prime. God damn imagine if Emmanuel Steward had him. The Ruiz KO is the scariest KO I may have ever seen.
And how can anyone dispute that Floyd and Manny are already ATGs? They are consensus the best two fighters of the past decade. Manny went on one of the most terrifying and historic runs in boxing history - knocking out HOFs. Mayweather definitely did some cherry picking, and as a human being he's a complete piece of **** (gangster, burns money, beats women), but to say that he's not at least approaching ATG status is stupid. Is he the GOAT? **** no. But if he quit after Pacquiao, regardless of the result, he's in the ATG category. Also, let's not forget that Pacquiao won fighter of the ****ing decade. If you're the best fighter in an entire decade, you are, historically, an ATG.
arguably borderline HOF.
This is a past prime pacquiao. i expect nothing less since mayweather waited 5 years for pac to slow down. :nonono:
Floyd is also past prime.. but sinse he was better to beging with that wont help manny at all.. :boxing:
Manny Pacquiao... He's great but could've been better. His resume isn't all that impressive. He could've fought tougher guys
QFT..
KTFO6 Deal With It.. :boxing: you cant be ATG when you fall asleep on the job.. :booty:
floyd joy. shame he didnt have no heart, no cajones when it mattered most. hes still arguably borderline HOF doe to be fair.
Border line HOF? He will box the **** out of Manny.. :bottle:
Oh, is he? Based on what?
Oscar had a better career and better resume and he's not an ATG.
Tyson was probably the biggest hype job of all time.
Entertaining as hell, but very overrated.
Youngest heavyweight champion of all time and then unified the titles to become the undisputed HW champ not an easy task. A 19 year old capturing the a major heavyweight belt is something that I honestly don't see happening ... It's a record that's overlooked but I'd put it up there with Dimaggios hitting streak record..
Point is I don't think he's a hypejob
