This weekend marks the first time in a long time that a regular boxing show returns to free TV. As much as a lot of us do not like Al Haymon and the fights he has kept from happening (Kovalev-Stevenson, GGG-Quillin / Chavez, LSC vs Rigondeaux to name a few recent ones), I think as fans we need to recognize the significance of a fight as good as Thurman-Guerrero showing up on NBC for anyone to watch.
What does this mean? It means you can go to your local bar and ask them to turn on NBC so that you can watch the fights. Right now you can't go to bars and ask them to turn on HBO to watch Golovkin because most bars won't have HBO on their cable package. You can't go to a lot of places and ask them to show PPV either because showing PPV cards costs bars lots of money ($2000-5000 for some cards).
If you want, as a boxing fan RIGHT NOW you can pick up the phone, call your favorite local bar and ask them if they are showing the boxing match on NBC this Saturday. And if they say what boxinjg match, just tell them there's free boxing on NBC on Saturday and you were wondering if they could show it. This exposes boxing not just to you but to EVERYONE who is at that bar.
If you have roommates or good friends but you don't have HBO (outside of streaming which a lot of us do), you can go to them and say, "hey let's watch the fights on NBC this Saturday" and turn on your television to a channel you definitely have and watch it on the couch with them. No effort involved. Forget the casual channel flipper: YOU can bring boxing to peoples' lives. Make a small fight party out of it! I know that I personally will either be at a bar or having people over for Thurman-Guerrero.
The biggest fight in history is coming up. How many people have you told about it? Hopefully everyone you know, because this is a big chance to talk about a boxing event that your average person will actually be excited about. "A $250 million fight between the two best boxers of the generation" should do nicely. The best offensive fighter in the world vs the best defensive fighter in the world. An undefeated fighter who is also the highest paid athlete in the world against an eight-division world titlist and four-division champion. The fight sells itself.
Show people highlight clips of these guys. Watch Pacquiao-Hatton and Mayweather-Marquez with your friends. Heck, watch Pacquiao-Cotto and Mayweather-Cotto for a common opponent handled two entirely different ways. Post facebook status updates about the fight. Most importantly make plans for the fight day. It's probably a $100 pay-per-view ($110 HD option?? lol) so find some people to split that **** up with you. Everyone you know will be at least somewhat intrigued by the "biggest boxing match in history." Finding twenty people to see the fight shouldn't be too hard.
These are ways that as fans we can grow the sport and bring interest to it. Among my friends and family, I have people asking me about the fight that didn't know what boxing was three months ago. My roommates haven't seen two fights between them but they're all really interested in Mayweather-Pacquiao now and have been youtubing fights. I have friends talking about how they'll come visit me so we can watch the fight together. It's huge. The NBC fight is huge too.
As fans we have a real opportunity to get our friends and families interested in our great passion. I encourage everyone to call around this week to find out which local bars are going to show the NBC fights on Saturday and to see if you can convince some of them to show it. I think it'll make a BIG difference if we can get people watching the NBC cards and treating them like sporting events on the level of a football game.
