I think we all can agree that if he's a quick study GBP will match him carefully and make a lot of money.
Based on the 2 fights he has had that I have seen, I think he's the next Butterbean - meaning a side show. For the sake of boxing I hope I'm wrong.
He's been talked about for a while. Johnny Bray was training him when he first came over for about a year, dunno why he isnt anymore. I thought he would have had more fights by now but I think he is learning to box from scratch pretty much, and that takes time. Big and powerful as he is, I can see him getting sparked as his skills seem pretty rudimentary.
The only guy I can compare Dong with is Valuev, and looking at his videos, Dong seems a lot faster, especially in regard to hand speed. Valuev could go 12 rounds and he could take a punch. If Dong can too, I think he will be more than just a freak show. Valuev was lucky that he had a bunch of stops and starts to career before he hooked up with Sauerland promotions. He was able to learn his craft before he had to fight opponents that had a chance of winning. This guy probably has a team that wants to cash out the minute he fights an HBO type opponent. If that happens within a few years, he will lose and lose spectacularly.
Asianboxing posted one of his kickboxing fights against Bob Sapp...all I can say is Sapp is terrible and Dong isn't much more than a freak show. #3 Chinese Heavyweight.

They're trying to take advantage of the fact that HW division has no upper limit. Too bad that strategy fails because these monster-sized guys have no coordination or speed.
This guy is just a cash grab heavyweight. The fact that he's also Chinese adds to that appeal. People around him will make money from him and then he'll get dropped as soon as he takes a few losses in his career. He's big, strong but extremely limited. It takes more than size and power to be a good boxer. As bad as the heavyweight division seems to be, he still won't cut it.
Bscene ran an article about Dong a couple of weeks back, with videos. He was a kickboxer in China before he came to the states to try his hand at boxing. Buddy Mcgirt is training him and it looks to me like the big guy has some talent.
Taishon Dong?
Taishan Dong from China...Anyone have any insight on this guy? I have not been able to find any fights so far....

Appearently he hasn't had any amateur career at all, his professional boxing career so far is his only experience.
I'm not so sure what to think of him, we all know what happened to Tye Fields.
Geez when will mainstream sports websites stop comparing every tall foreign guy to Ivan Drago because they haven't watched since '82
"Boxing Now Has Real-Life Ivan Drago"
Really?
