Amir Khan claims Floyd Mayweather is running scared after picking the "easy route" by fighting Manny Pacquiao.
Mayweather announced last Friday that he would meet long-time rival Pacquiao in a mega-bout worth up to £260 million at Las Vegas' MGM Grand, as the world's top two pound-for-pound fighters finally face each other.
Khan, however, claims Mayweather only agreed to the May 2 fight in order to avoid their own proposed showdown.
The British fighter, who defeated Devon Alexander in Las Vegas last December, has been close to securing bouts with both Mayweather and Pacquiao, only to see proposed deals fall through.
"We came very close to securing the fight between both Manny and Mayweather - particularly Manny," Khan told The Sun. "I was in a good position and I could have fought either one of them.
"My strong performance against Devon Alexander has made some of the opponents think twice about taking me on. Mayweather has probably chosen to fight Pacquiao because it's an easier fight.
"He is taking the easy route but boxing is a business and obviously he is going to do what makes for sense for him financially. "
What promises to be the richest fight in boxing history has been half a decade in the making but Khan fears the encounter could prove to be a damp squib.
"It could be tough," Khan added. "The thing is when they were both at their peak - which was six years ago - this fight was talked about then and it should have happened then.
"That's when it would have been a great fight because they were both explosive. They were both at their peak and the fight would have been massive. They both seemed unbeatable back then.
"Six years later Manny Pacquiao has had two defeats and been knocked out. Mayweather has had some good fights but he is getting old and he's showing signs of ageing now. He is getting caught a lot more frequently.
"For me, this fight isn't going to be as explosive or as good as it would have been five or six years ago. Who knows, styles make fights.
"They're both very experienced but it could turn out to be a boring fight because there is just so much expectation on it.
"People are already thinking there are going to be fireworks and it's going to be massive, but just imagine, we've seen it in the past with mega-fights, they often turn out to be quite dull."
Cant wait to see who Khan decides to take on next. I just wish people who push him to fight a top fighter instead of agreeing with him that the top fighters are ducking him.
I'm glad khan put in a decent enough performance on Alexander to scare floyd in to taking the fight with pacquiao
Floyds thoughts:
Fight khan for 70m run the risk of getting out sped/outworked. He's faster than me, has faster feet than me. High risk low reward. Laughing stock if khan somehow manages to win.
Fight PAC for 200m run risk of getting out sped/out worked. Faster than me, has faster feet than me. High risk/ high reward. If I lose its to a legend. Rematch could generate more money.
