I can't think of anyone i guess he will retire unifying belts and then the division will be more even with Fury, Stiverne, Wilder, Arreola, Perez... and the emerging prospects like Anthony Joshua.
'really' sorry by the spelling mistake
Most basketball players are too willowy to make as heavyweights. A guy like Watt or prime Julius Peppers could have been contenders if they learned boxing young and could take a punch and have decent stamina for their girth. Lief Larsen made it to a fringe contender status and he was never more than a journeyman NFL player with no special talents beyond raw strength in the NFL. If Larsen had learned boxing from the age of 12, he might have been able to get beyond the European level of boxing.
There are no similarities in skillsets whatsoever!
.
That's what I've been saying, I'm baffled by all of this nonsense. Being big and athletic doesnt mean he'd take to boxing, have the mind for boxing, or even WANT TO BOX! This is the dumbest "what if" argument going.
Football or Basketball backgrounds lend absolutely zero credence to HW boxing other than athleticism and height respectively.
There are no similarities in skillsets whatsoever!
And height is only a virtue for a skilled boxer who knows how to utilise it (which is developed via an early boxing pedigree).
And athleticism is one of the LEAST relevant virtures at HW proven by more successful chubbier and less athletic fighters than lean and athletic ones almost evenly.
You can only afford to be as athletic at HW boxing as you are tall, and you can compensate for your lack of height at HW by being heavy!
How many former basketball players and footballers have crossed over to boxing only to be wiped out at top level? Plenty! Because they ****ing suck at boxing!
What a stupid bloody argument, promoted ONLY by ridiculous American propagandists who can't win at boxing anymore!
Even if your Wilder wins, his reign is destined to be very short because he can't box and has no chin or stamina.
lol at your straw man argument. Nobody has ever said you can pull these guys straight out of these pro sports and expect them to be champion boxers, you have to get them young or else they wind up raw like Wilder/Jennings/Mitchell etc. Yet you seem to keep repeating it as if we are.
You clearly cannot distinguish an elite athlete from an average one, probably because you don't watch football/basketball. An elite athlete is not Fury, Valuev, Helenius, Wach, etc. these guys are all uncoordinated, slow, plodding, predictable.
An athlete is considered an athlete because they're loaded with fast twitch muscle fibers, which allow you to explode. Explosive movements lead to things like Wilder's right hand, fast footwork, quick waist/head movement, etc.
Look how far Jennings/Wilder have gotten with their athleticism alone, Wilder can't even throw a jab, yet he's fighting for a HW title lmao. If you're that big and agile you're pretty much guaranteed to have some sort of KO power or punching speed (wlad even said Wilder punches extremely fast), and that goes a long way in boxing.
Wlad is one of the most athletic HW's in boxing, he's big and agile.
He was planning on playing basketball or football at Bama, both sports are pretty interchangeable in college as guys often switch between the two. Football players generally play defense.rebound/box out and are raw offensive players.
Well we'll see saturday if your theories are proved right.
My opinion is he already fought the 2nd best guy in the division, Povetkin.
So no. Not for a while.
I wonder if Povetkin would be in line for a WBC title shot since he's rated highly by them. Maybe a mando for the winner of Saturday's fight. The way Povetkin has fought lately, I think the whole division sans Wlad is in trouble.
I don't think "fight" is the appropriate word...
Wilder better bring his helmet then.
And no, Wilder's not a basketball player, i've seen a video of him playing a friendly 1on1 against Toni Harrisson...

No i doubt he loses but if there is a dark horse i say it's fury. He is big, can box & is so unorthodox you can't really prepare for him. He fought rogan & chisora in the southpaw stance which was pretty impressive. He is unpredictable & seems to improve every fight but his biggest issue is his occasional lack of motivation...

Dude, you do realize Wilder is a football/basketball player right? Should he win tomorrow, he will prove what we've been saying all along. Jennings is another example, it's not simply a coincidence.

Hahah love it! Don't people sound so stupid and desperate by talking about "NFL, and NBA, doe"!
"Lebron James, and Julius Peppers, doe"!!!

Father Time will catch up with Wladimir Klitschko sooner of later.
But it may not be for another couple of years, he looked very good in his last fight.
I think Wladimir will retire when he feels like it and that he doesn't have it anymore. He'd rather make a fight ugly without letting his opponent any chance like against Povetkin than let anybody beat him and put an end to his reign.
Lots of guys in the heavyweight division can punch so it's not about that, the real issue is, no one is smart enough, or skilled, to land effectively and beat wlad. Also what's coming back is a bazooka so it's hard to generate any sort of effective gameplan.
Seems like most today cannot punch hard. Wilder and Stiverne can but they are WBC fighters. Povetkin has some power though.

It's unlikely anyone can beat him now. He is old and maybe old age and a real good challenger will someday beat him before he retires. His chin is his weak link but he is smart and skillful and has learned how to protect his chin. He is a great puncher with both hands and has one of the best jabs in boxing. That's a hard combination to beat.

Is there any heavyweight who can relly beat Wladimir? | BoxingScene Community
