14 years ago Today the stage was set for the two best Jr.Middleweights of the world in the year 2000 met in what turned out to be one of the best fight of All-Time imo...you had 2 Undefeated champions putting their titles and records on the line, something we rarely get now days!
As a huge Vargas fan, this fight was truly special for me watching it live at 16 at my dads friends house.... From the sound of the bell to begin round 1 there was tension and anticipation building in the room, and just like that BOOM!! a massive left hook puts vargas down for the first time in his career...he gets up quick then BOOM, he goes down again, now the Vargas fans including myself are crapping bricks at this point and are in utter disbelieve that this is actually happening!!
Vargas survives round 1, and gets his legs back to start round 2. Vargas seems to be adjusting to tito when a jab rocks him again, then i seen something that i was vrry impressef with and that was the defensive skill Vargas was very underated for as he made tito miss 14 straight shots in 1 continued sequence!! Absoutely amazing!
Round 3 starts as more of the same happens here only Vargas iz begining to turn the tide here as tito gets jabbed/grazzed howehever you want to perceive it, now tito is in trouble !! And the unthinkable happens, Tito low blows Vargas....boxing resumes as vargas has his best round so far!
Round 4 begins as both land sum jabs andBOOM!!, just like that tito is on the mat from a beughtiful left hook from vargas... then the drama begins and what materialized was the best fight of 2000 IMO, and one of the best jr.middleweight fights of all time...
Share your guys' memories and thoughts on one of the best fights ever!!
I like Fernando a lot as well and there really no shame in his performance. He had heart, bravado, skill, and balls all tapered with his trademark ferocity. But he just was defeated by a better fighter that night. The only thing Fernando did was be Fernando from beginning to end.
By the way, this is one of my all time favorite fights. Too bad there aren't enough Trinidad's and Vargas's to go around in today's boxing era. The sport thus far would be in a different place taken to a whole new level.
I really liked Vargas but he bit off more than he could chew with Tito. His handlers rushed him way too quickly and his lifestyle wasn't as disciplined as it should have been (he looked so out of shape against Wright, for instance). It's a shame because I thought he had a great shot to beat Oscar if the Tito fight hadn't occurred.
Yeah i agree. Tito just had way too much experiance for vargas....the de la hoya/vargas fight was bad ass too, it just looked really bad when vargas tested positive... there was nothing i can say to defend him on that. Unfortunately.
Yeah BU, BU, BUT.......,..... nah i'll leave it alone!:lol1: It truly was a special night that i will always hold dear, and is one of the best fights ive seen in the last 15 years....morales/barerra got fight of the year that year and rightfully so, but my pick was trinidad/vargas! El Feroz all day!

It's the mental pressure that Trinidad applies that wore opponents down. He just never stopped attacking and coming forward regardless of what Vargas did. And Vargas' D was never that great (pause). What I loved was how, after getting his hook countered, Tito began working the right hand overtime throughout the middle rounds. Made Vargas forget about that hook until the championship rounds when he uncorked it again and put him away for good. Masterful performance.

Lol... you cant make excuses for a guy who lost by KO! You just cant help to think about "WHAT IF" scenarios here... and though vargas had his best rounds after the low blows which had alot to do with titos eye blowing up between rounds as his eye was irritated from being poked.... had vargas not been low blowed. And NOT HAVE his lateral movement taken away from him he would have been fresher going down the stretch...... no excuses tito won that night, PERIOD!! I just get rawled up for this fight DAZED. :lol1: SOWWEY.

I'm not sure what the exact method of wrapping was but it's legal in Vegas. You heard Nazim say it himself. It really isn't that big a deal. Excuse #1.
Low blows -- Vargas' best rounds came after the low blows. I think the real issue were the head blows. Not like Nando was clean throughout the fight himself. Excuse #2
No need for excuses, bro. He lost to the better fighter. Got ruined, sadly.

You can wrap adhesive surgical tape on the skin, before wraping with gauze and more surgical tape?
Cmon DAZED, vargas lost but if tito using veteran tactics like deliberate low blows makes him the better fighter fairly to you then hey more power to you!

It's not a question of if you can or cant. What Tito did is legal in Vegas, for instance. Vargas lost to the better fighter. Period.

Again you cant wrap tape on the skin of the hand, you have to wrap gauze first, this is why its an illegal wrap...
And vargas wasnt a green fighter, he had beat campas, marquez, winky wright, ike quartey all at a young age.... no green fighter could have done that.
Vargas fought a very calculated fight standing right in front of tito, he made tito miss a hell of alot of punches in there standing right in front of him.... who else did that?? Now i agree he should have boxed more because clearly he was the better boxer but he was out to prove he was for real, and he was! Though it took alot out of him. Lets face it, the low blows affected him tremendously from there on out.it limited his movement big time.
He knew how to hold, its just in the instances he was rocked bad he couldnt.. and you keep going on about tito not getting credit and in that sense you are wrong again... tito has gotten full credit from me. In every post i have ever posted about him hes a ATG from puerto rico, but i cant help but bring out his ability to fight dirty when it mattered pertaining to this fight here.... and the "WHAT IF" factor will always be tied to this fight, if you like it or not!

Listen, I'm not saying low blows doesn't have an effect on a fight nor the outcome of it but damn you are making it sound Vargas was KO'ED via low blows and the fight couldn't continue thus excuse making on your part.
About the wraps, this topic has been beaten more than Pee Wee Herman spanking his salami. Read the post from a previous poster that explains it from the man himself that exposed the discrepancy initially (Nazim Richardson ) thus making your next point as baseless as your first.
Nowhere do you mention from your initial post in making this thread that :
A. Fernando was green when taking this fight. For crying out loud Tito had more knockouts than Vargas had professional fights.
B. Vargas opted to bang with a puncher and stand in front of Tito instead of boxing him effectively thus a recipe for disaster. In fact, Fernando banked solely on the notion that because Tito was coming up in weight to fight him that he (Trinidad ) was the smaller man therefore he can muscle Tito. Another big miscalculation on Fernando's part.
C. Vargas didn't know how to hold when in trouble. Granted, one can attribute this to heart while others to stupidity in any case he paid a price and was never the same since.
Unfortunately, this is the mentality of today's fighters and fans alike. Down play another's victory by discrediting the victor.

So deliberate low blows are fair to you??? This aint a street fight dude, and the wrap situation is brought up because of the hopkins fight... you cant help but think the same thing could have happened here. Dont get butt hurt dude, relax and take a deep breath.

Nazim Richardson: To me, Trindad's situation was much, much different than Margarito's. What Trindad did was actually legal in some places. It just wasn't legal in New York. I had the rulebook with me right there in my hand.
Trinidad was an abrasion against the rules. Margarito downright had a weapon. There is a difference when you say you're playing chess and have your men lined up differently, as opposed to having extra men on the board. Margarito tried to bring extra men. He had a knuckle pad. Margarito had a strip over the back of his hand, around his thumb and wrist. They told me it was because of a previous injury was why they wrapped it that way. One look and you could tell it wasn't right.
No, not in any way close to margarito.. he had tape wraped on the hand and over the knuckles(not pre-wrapping tape either) then followed by gauze and more tape, and thats what made that wrap illegal.. it made his wrap more compact...imo

Why would it fit an agenda??:pat: did he not have his hands wrapped for the vargas fight?? Is it not possible that if he tried to wrap them like that with hopkins before he got busted, that maybe he was doing it like that possibly his entire career???
Its not hard to connect the dots here... all due respect.
It was just an issue with that particular commission. For instance, the NSAC said they would've been perfectly fine with the way his hands were wrapped. Don't think it was a big issue and even Nazim Richardson said it wasn't that serious.
this fight is very dear to me.
i was 20 when this happened and alone in california, i watched it by myself and recorded it on vhs. rewatched this fight as many times as i did Predator when i was a little dude living in PR, which was the only english movie we had.
i hated this fight for tito, i felt that vargas was a wonderkid with a great all around game and heart for 2 dudes.
the thing that ABSOLUTELY infuriates me about this fight is one thing, Jay Nady. with his already established penchant for stopping fights early i found it unbelievable that he let 'nando take that punishment in the 12th after that 1st devastating left hook ... i still squint my eyes when i see that last right hand land on vargas, completely depleted but still a warrior.
no joke, i think this fight is what changed me as a punk 20 year old who at the time only rooted for rican fighters to a fan of boxing.
i mean, i still don't know who my fav all time is, MAB or Tito.
Good post man, it really doesn't matter who wins a good fight
