Okay I just touched on this in another topic.
I honestly was never a big Calzaghe fan but ya gotta call it honest in boxing. Kovalev is one of my favorite fighters but ill be honest, if Calzaghe was around in the light heavy division my boy Krusher would get whupped.
A lot of us American fans only got to know Joe against Lacy, Kessler, Hopkins and Jones.
HONESTLY I've since then studied Calzaghe, let the haters roll in but I think he was just as good as Roy Jones, James Toney, Bernard Hopkins any of those guys. There I said it.
I think guys like Eubank and Benn are incredibly underrated, especially Benn who has the greatest victory of them all against the GMan, which is unfortunately tarnished because of the aftermath.
Benn-Eubank is actually one of my favorite fights, I advise you watch it if you haven't....those guys were great but Calzaghe was on another level in my opinion.....never seen a guy that could fight like him.
Anyway how highly do you regard Joe Calzaghe?
What in the hell did he do at 75 to suggest he could beat Kovalev and Stevenson. Lol this thread is a joke.
Stevenson is sh*t, Calzaghe wasn't thats how Calzaghe beats him.
Kovalev is the new king of 175.
sven ottke was the best super middleweight. 21 title defenses, unified champ. no one can top that.
With a record of 34 wins, 6 KOs with only 5 of those wins coming by way of robbery - he has to be up there.
I'd have those 3 in the top 5 along with Roy Jones and Nigel Benn.
I'm not sold on having Roy jones in there. He had a limited amount of fights against not great opposition aside from James Toney, which of course is easily the best super middle win ever probably, but still. I'd prefer people who actually spent more than 4-5 fights in the division.
He's the greatest super middleweight along with Froch and Ward and a deserved hall of famer.
He's not an ATG, but he had a HOF career.
I'd have those 3 in the top 5 along with Roy Jones and Nigel Benn.
Joe could be dropped early but the longer the fight went on the more he could eat punches.
I think the Jones knockdown was an absolute freak as well. It was barely a punch. Calzaghe walked through him with impunity there after and Roy did land some big shots despite getting a battering.
Byron Mitchell came closest to putting Joe away and he definitely hurt him bad.
Calzaghe is extremely underrated on this forum. Sir Joe would box Kovalov's ears off to an easy 12-0 UD.
I really can't see that happening. Calzaghe was very good as frustrating guys and rattling their brains with those funny looking short punches but all someone with Kovalev's power and ring control would have to do is drop the right hand on Joe a couple times and end that in a hurry. Joe was hittable while he was accumulating points.

I agree with you but I have Kovalev winning two rounds. 10-2 Calzag.

i live 10 mins from calzaghe , and i remember the byron mitchell fight in cardiff castle , he got dropped real bad in the 1st , got up and kod him ... ive seen enough in that and the kessler round 4 , rjj round 1 , to assume kovalev could ko him ... but kovalev hiself doesnt seem to react to well to being hit , where yet to see an elite puncher test his chin . which is the only reason i give stevenson a chance against him
I hear where you're coming from and I'd wants Kovalev to be successful against Calzag but we have to be honest and Joe had the boxing brains to beat a guy like that.

Pretty damn good.
I picked Lacy to stop him in the early rounds (I'm a yank jockey) and he was pretty much exposed.
People laughed and rightfully so.

Don't understand the hate for Calzaghe, he was definitely an all time top 10 super middleweight, it's debatable but personally I'd have him in the top 5.
I'm just trying to educate the forum.
And I was so hoping that you would play the sarcasm card instead of owning up to those totally ridiculous comments. :pat:
