I love roy, but, tonight, his commentary was absolutely embarrassing. It was insulting to suggest throwing 12 punches a round was part of his strategy. Or that Bhop, no kos in years, was setting it up for a late ko. Unreal.
Roy Jones is great at what he does, he's very rarely wrong if you pay attention and when he does, at least he'll admit it. Showed a lot of respect for Hopkins tonight......something someone with less class wouldn't do.
If you think Roy Jones isn't a good commentator, well, my bet is you just don't like Roy..........??............:moon:
Nice try retard, but, no. Roy was my avatar for the last week and I have repeatedly said he's the best fighter of the last 20 years. My assessment was very objective based on his performance, unlike you dickriders.
I disagree because, just like Jones said. Hopkins did set Kovalev up for some big shots late in the fight. And even in the 12th round. It just wasn't enough.
So the strategy, of a fighter who hasn't ko'd anyone in a decade, is to try to take a guy, who's never been ko'd, late , and try to knock him out? Do you not see hw absurd that is? And how unbelievably wrong he was. He did nothing in the 12th. Landing four punches doesn't lend credence to what Roy was saying, it shows hw idiotic it was.
nothing wrong with what he said, best commentator in the business right now, you're just clueless
the problem is most people to begin with dont have a clue what they are watching, so ofcourse roy sucks to you when he says profound sht and it's not just the obvious crap anyone can see and nod there head to like paulie malignaggi
You're phuckin retarded. Roy was dead wrong. He was saying it was part of a strategy. The fight was the same for the whole fight, so it wasn't a strategy. Hopkins fought like ****. In the late rounds, same results. The twelfth was as brutal as it gets. He was shamelessly trying to find something positive when their clearly wasn't. He didn't know wtf he was talking about.
I thought he was good.
From the get go he said that Hopkins was wrong that Serghei wasn;t Pavlik and he articulated it very well. Then he was outlining Serghei strategy and all of the things he was doing great, distance, walking him down, jabs to the body, etc.
And while 12 punches a round is a stupid strategy it's not something that we haven't seen with Bhop in the past so Roy just said what he was doing.
I thought Roy had a great night overall.
Jones and Kellerman get singled out a lot for bias here. But neither are anywhere near as biased as Lampley is and what Merchant became in later years.

The part that made me cringe is when Lampley asked Roy if B-Hop should keep fighting or retire.
That's like asking the president of the NRA if someone should carry a gun.
:pat:
 Good point!
I loved when he said "On that alien head of his" in one of the replays where Kovalev landed a punch on Hopkins dome lol. :lol1: :lol1:
He took several shots at Bhop through the fight, you can tell he doesn't like him lol.
Was it not obvious to everyone that Kovalev had tripped in the 12th as well rather than being badly hurt? Even if you were unsure initially, the body language straight afterwards made it fairly clear that it was just a stumble I thought.
Lampley and Kellerman were trying to turn it into Chavez-Martinez.
Roy was terrible in this fight. He was only seeing things from a Hopkins fan POV. I don't know why this was, but I'm damn sure I heard biased commentary the entire fight from him. These things are a lot less subtle when the fight is as lopsided as this one was.
Generally speaking, the HBO crew is steadily getting worse.
Boxnation was pretty much on point although they seemed sympathetic to Popkins. Was curious about the HBO commentary, they went into spin/hype/panic mode it sounds like :lol1:
Gotta rewatch with HBO
Lampley has a great voice but he needs to give it up. He doesn't call the fight at all any more, he just treats the broadcast as an extension of the fight game where he just gives his opinion on everything and goes off on tangents.
Just describe the action! It's a fairly simple job description.
I thought Jones did good, he was probably the best out of all of them tonight, he put Lampley and Kellerman to shame. HBO might as well fire their asses and let Roy run the whole show
I thought it was great.
Being honest i could understand a couple times in recent fights where people have complained but i thought last nights commentary was fantastic and spot on for the most part, even more so given how praiseworthy he was of BHop.
I think it's just something we have to come to accept on here now, after every big fight there will be people looking to moan about something for the sake of moaning.
Roy Jones is a great commentator, the whole HBO team are great for the most part, people are just sad bastards moaning for the sake of moaning.
I don't usually like Roy but he did have a good night tonight, his comments were much more insightful than the other guys
He's improving but the HBO team is **** in general
Lampley was putting him in his place all night, and Roy as usual would respond with his little chuckle. Roy provides great insight though,a hell of a lot more than Mr. Jim "Bang-Bang" Lampley. Roy knows his shyt, I listen to him more than the two other guys.
I love hearing George Foreman put Lampley in his place (Prince-Barrera & Gatti-Ward II fights)

I'd love to hear more of Andre Ward though. He's very solid as well. The last few times Roy was absent he hasn't been there........
Lampley is horrible, couldn't stand Merchant and both were typically pretty hammered. I have some issues but won't complain too much about Kellerman though I do like him better with Papas...who isn't bad. Bernstein is better but that's experience....
Mauro Rannallo is horrible on Showtime........Paulie is very good, not sure what happened to Tarver but he wasn't bad either. I preferred Steve Albert to Lampley or Mauro and back in the day on HBO thought Barry Thompkins was pretty good........
Mauro, Lampley and Merchant always have favorites, gargling Manny Pacquiao or Miguel Cotto's nutsacks while trying to talk though.....can't stand them.......
Leonard was good back in the day too, Ferdie Pacheco wasn't horrible....Bobby Czyz & George Foreman were but not nearly as bad as the worst all-time, LENNOX LEWIS' STUTTERING ASS.......YOU'D THINK HE WAS PUNCH DRUNK BUT HE'S NOT......
Strange thread. Just Roy bias? He was pretty articulate on what Hopkins was trying to do........and he was essentially right. Anyone who believes he was wrong, have you considered Roy has scouted him for the better part of the last 20 years?? Pretty sure he had a good idea what he was talking about and pointing out how and when Kovalev was nullifying Hopkins game-plan giving several examples along the way.........
If you think Roy Jones isn't a good commentator, well, my bet is you just don't like Roy..........??............:moon:
I like Roy but the HBO team as a whole is terrible. Has Lampley completely given up on blow-by-blow commentating. That's what he's supposed to be doing isn't it?
The three of them just carry on a disjointed conversation for 12 rounds instead of actually calling the fight. Annoying as hell. The Showtime team is far superior.
... I had no sound for this fight (because of a driver's conflict in my computer)...
But I enjoyed the 'silent" fight, as I smiled all night long and I was free to score this fight correctly (i.e. 120-107)... :)
