Most of his knock downs were from being off balance. And he got up all but twice. Only 1 fighter was able to keep him on the canvas. That fighter is Sonny Liston. Sonny ****ing Liston. You need to understand something. Foreman is not just another puncher. This guy is a wrecking machine. Nobody (with the exception of Foreman), not Tyson, not Lewis not even Tua come anywhere close to this guy's punching power. If you wanted to keep Patterson on the canvas in that era you needed to be Liston or have a ****ing shot gun. Simple as that.
Gilbert Rogin of Sports Illustrated wrote: "Liston is not a notably swift and flashy hitter, but that final left hook crashed into Patterson's cheek like a diesel rig going downhill, no brakes....There are no fighters extant, and precious few mammals of any variety, that could have beaten the count. The miracle is that Patterson was able to get to his knees."
Patterson said Ingo hit harder than Liston. So Ingo was definitely not "weak"
Yet Liston squashed Patterson like a fly in 1 round twice.
Cassius Clay, 20, schooled 'ingo' so badly in 1960 before the patterson decider, that his trainer had to stop the sparring session :lol1:
wrong forum.
patterson is generally considered a fringe HW great. first man to regain the title, bonafide star in his day.
compared to great HW, he has a bad chin. his size obviously doesn't do any favors. patterson was LHW sized. like a lot of other guys, he fought at H dub for the money.
Agree with NE on this one.
Our Patterson wasn't even that good for his time. He avoided all the big contenders for years.
Yes and consider that Johannson was punch weak too AND neither a real HW either!

I forget which boxer had the nickname "Touch of Sleep". Patterson's should have been
"Touch me and I Sleep".
He got KO'd by Johansson's "Hammer of Thor" right hand. Seriously. And Ingo rarely trained for fights, unless you consider banging Swedish blondes training.

Compared to a real HW?
No, he has among the weakest chins of all time when viewed against the 200+ champs & contenders.
Patterson vs Liston was the equivalent of Spinks vs Tyson.
The moment he entered the ring he was already KO'ed
How do you know they hit harder than Liston? Tocco who has trained Liston, Tyson, and Foreman, said Liston hit harder than both of them. Wepner, Ali, and Scrap Iron all said Liston hit harder than Foreman
I think Liston hits harder than them.
Perhaps not as explosive but more heavy handed.
It's hard to say really, all 4 are big punchers.
i also think that tyson, lewis, and tua punch harder than sonny liston.
the most dangerous HW puncher of all time, for me, is still joe louis. he might not hit a heavybag as hard as liston, but if you're talking about hitting an opponent who is trying to hit you back, there's no man more dangerous than joe louis in my eyes. left hook - hospital. right hand - cemetary.
