The Sergio Martinez that def. Kelly Pavlik in 2010
The Kelly Pavlik that def. Jermain Taylor in 2007
The Jermain Taylor that def. Bernard Hopkins in 2005
The Bernard Hopkins that def. Felix Trinidad in 2001
Cotto beats Taylor and Martinez, goes to war with Pavlik and may be outclassed by Hopkins.
That's how I see it.
Prime Cotto @ 160 vs. the rest!
Just being honest people!
Cotto is not Prime at 160. Thats 20 pounds overweight of his prime.
Why people think Sergio was some slickster in his prime is beyond me. The BEST Sergio is when he fought who? Pavlik? You realize that Pavlik is much slower than Cotto because of his size and is less skilled than Cotto, because Cotto is the much better technical boxer. Pavlik landed 45% of power punches on Sergio, that is NOTHING like Roy Jones, nothing. Martinez has always had sh*t defense and got hit ALL THE TIME because his hands were down. People come in here as fans of Martinez because he is in great fights, fun to watch fights.
Guess what? If Martinez was slick his fights would be boring like Floyd and Roy, but they aren't because he gets hit a lot and he wants to hit a guy. Cotto beats the sh*t out of Martinez any day of the week and twice on Sunday at any time in their careers.
My exact language was Martinez was a "pretty good" fighter. Roy Jones at his best was an all-time great.
Martinez did try to imitate Roy in the ring, any one of his fights after he reached the top show that. He wasn't the best at it, because he just didn't have Prime Roy's reflexes, ever.
Martinez did a "pretty good" Roy Jones impression.
Martinez didn't have legs when he fought Cotto. He moved around like he was boxing with boots on.
Martinez vs. Cotto would've been fun if Martinez had his legs. I've got nothing but love for Cotto, he beat Martinez and always comes to fight. Both guys are true Champs, both guys fought with a lot of courage, and never took a nickel from me they didn't earn.

I think Cotto beats all of them at middleweight NOW, in the way I think he beats Basilio and Fullmer now, in the same way he beats Carlos Monzon now, in the way he beats Marvin Hagler now...
Cotto's all heart, but Sergio when he was at his best, which was
"pretty good," resembled an argentine Roy Jones. Hands all low, avoiding punches purely with foot movement and a little bending at the waist.
That, and he had a good chin with power and a showed lot of heart when he fought Cintron, Williams, Pavlik, Jr. Murray even Cotto.
Too much power from all of the listed fighters. Everyone of them get Cotto out of there by the middle rounds.

Cotto at his very best needs to weigh 140lbs! He has no power against the top tier welters and middles. He got Sergio at the right time and I don't consider Sergio a top fifty middle so stopping Sergio was a good win but nothing tremendous, he was whipped his last time out.
Beating Basilio and Monzon?????? You must be from Disney Land, Cotto gets demolished by both of them and its not close!!!!
Ray.
He would beat Martinez any time but the others were too big and strong and hit too hard for Cotto. Hopkins would beat him like taking candy from a baby. Cotto and Martinez will go down in history as poor middleweight champions. If Cotto was a good champion he would do what Martinez refused to do and fight GGG as soon as possible instead of possibly fighting 147 pounder Bradley or 154 pounder Canelo. Right now he is on a very long vacation fighting nobody. That is good for Cotto but bad for boxing and the middleweight division. It's time to defend your title, rich lazy boy Cotto. GGG will have fought 3 top 10 middleweights during your vacation you took after beating Martinez. That's why GGG and not Cotto is my real middleweight champ.
No one is saying he is a great Middleweight..he took a gamble and won the lottery...meaning he is in demand now....He just has to find the right person to sell his title too now and retire and have a great life
No shit Cotto loses to them, he's way past his prime. Why don't we make it hypothetical and say if Cotto was still in his prime like everyone else in the poll, then he'd at least have a chance.
Prime Cotto vs prime Martinez? I pick Cotto. But he'd probably lose to everyone else lol.

I think Monzon could still take him.

I'm sorry but NO. Cotto is the legitimate MW champion. Period, end of...
He's the champion, technically. Is he the best Middleweight? Hell no...not even close.
It annoys me when I hear about Martinez's bad knee. It's like David Hayes bad toe. It totally discredits an amazing performance from Cotto and great strategy by Roach and Cotto. 2010 Martinez may have stood a better chance but stylistically he'd still have the same problems, so I'd go with Cotto again.
A toe injury and re-constructive knee surgery at the age of 38 are probably a bit different when you really think about it.
None of them, Martinez looked like hell when they fought, after surgeries and long lay off and arguably losing to Murray...Pavlik would be like Margs but worse...Taylor and Hopkins would rough him up badly....
