So, Jermaine Taylor has made himself sort of relevant again picking up a win and an IBF title. For Miguel Cotto's next fight, most likely in January or February, as a stay-busy defense/unification, why not fight against Jermaine Taylor?
He may be past his prime, but it'd still be a decent fight against a true MW as he prepares for a big-time clash against Canelo and/or hopefully GGG?
Thoughts?
I honestly don't think Soliman was even hurt in that fight and was paid to lose so Taylor can get a belt so someone else from Haymons camp can get an easy title...Taylor will get a nice pay day and disapear
Are you serious? The thread maker must be on crack to even want to see that fight.
Well not really - crack has never been my thing.
I'm just thinking up of alternatives - everyone wants to see a Cotto superfight vs GGG and Canelo
In the off-chance that there is an interim fight before those big fights - I'm just looking at alternatives that we may see before those fights.
But hey, I guess it gets exciting 'round here regurgitating the same tired comment. We get it, everyone wants to see Cotto pass the lineal belt to GGG. The chances of the passage happening however in the first half of 2015 are nearly ZERO, but if it helps to just keep wishing on it, then have at it.
why would he need to collect a belt if he's going to avoid the only fight worth making at that weight? if he took a jermaine taylor fight, he'd deserved to get ktfo by jermaine taylor.
Ok we see what people are saying, but if its announced taylor vs ggg, the ggg people will think its a challenge, and swear its the fight of the century. you heard it hear first. The ggg people will swear its a great fight, just remember how its shot down when its proposed that cotto vs taylor is a shiiiiiiit fight, but awesome fight for ggg:friday:
i would be genuinely concerned for taylor's health against golovkin.
they fought soliman for a reason. he's one of the lightest punching fighters in the top 10 of any division.
This is basically just a Ricardo Mayorga-type opponent for Cotto. A well past-his-prime name who won't have any chance. But if it's a stay-busy while he waits for the Canelo clash in May, Taylor's better than some other names might be. I'm still not wholly at ease with Jermain Taylor fighting anyone period, tbh.

I agree Taylor vs GGG would be a great fight, I'd gladly pay money to see that.
Why not do a Trout rematch? I mean Taylor is not a champ he's simply a belt holder. At least against Trout it will serve as a barometer as to how much better Cotto really is under Roach. It will also be non-ppv and presumably easy to negotiate.
sadly trout was never the same after canelo... that chin was cracked badly...
It would be the nail in the coffin of Cotto's dwindling relevance. Just taking that fight would be worse than losing to Trout was.
Fight Canelo or Golovkin and get back on the map.
Nobody cares about your "middleweight title" if you won it against an injured retiree who showed up for the payday and defended it against a destroyed shell going through an attempted murder trial.
porque jermain taylor es "shot to sh#t."
let's not make a farce of the lineal MW title. "unifications" mean nothing. do you really care what color the belts are? that's the difference between the alphabet belts. they're of different colors. they mean nothing. unifying belts that means nothing isn't goign to justify a crap fight forme, and shouldn't for you either.
this is the same title that you can trace back to the great MWs. cotto should't even have this title. martinez hsould have taken his beating from golovkin like a man.
don't drag the freaking lineal MW title through the mud any longer.
It's all but certain that Cotto will fight early 2015 - if not a "named" opponent like Taylor, who then?
The Cotto/Canelo fight happens in either May or June. If he fights Mayweather its in May.
I want to see Cotto/GGG, but I doubt Cotto fights him, in what is surely a swan song fight before he secures a Canelo or Mayweather fight.
I could understand that it might be a "stoopid" fight, but other than those three, who else would you like to see in what would be a HBO WCB fight...that is realistic? Kirkland @154, knowing how unreliable he is; Bundrage @ 154, which is worse than Taylor?
Peter Quillin, although everyone hates him and he's a Showtime guy only? Murray who can't fight in USA? Maybe a Trout rematch?
It's easy to just ramble that everything is a sh#t fight, but any substance or alternatives? At least Cotto vs Taylor is a champ vs champ fight, non-PPV. But hey, if you have better ideas
gennady golovkin, the planet's best middleweight. that's a ppv fight, and tickets would command serious bucks in new york or las vegas.
I would have liked Cotto vs. Lee at MSG. Maybe it's still possible if Lee beats Korobov. Or Rosado vs. Lemieux winner maybe. I doubt any of them would be ready by late January/February though.
If they really want to get that Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry started up again then maybe get Sergio Mora.
Cotto vs. Mora in late January. And then Cotto vs. Canelo in May.
I don't have a problem with Cotto vs. Taylor, let them get paid, but when Cotto wins don't expect him to get props from anybody.
I can totally support these fights.
Not sure about Sergio Mora - he fights in such a spoiler mode.
I wouldn't expect Cotto to get props - it was just proposed as a stay busy fight in prep for a big fight against Canelo or GGG
Okay, naturally you can make fantasy fight threads but I hope on some day everyone will understand that: Haymon fighter = won't fight against any HBO/Top Rank fighter, because Haymon isn't interested in. The same goes to Quillin, Jacobs, etc... There are very few exceptions mostly the mandatories but even they are not always (see Quillin-Korobov or Garcia-Postol). Taylor will most likely lose his title against Quillin or Jacobs it depends on which one will win thier fight.
Cotto vs Canelo at 160lbs Title Fight.
Winner fights for all the belts against the other champ GGG!!!!
Anything else is just promoter BS or a fighter ducking his obligations as a champion or both.
I stopped watching boxing years ago because the correct matchups were rarely made. This is so easy to see Stevie Wonder can see it! (sorry Stevie)
Cotto vs Canelo is a good fight and the winner to challenge GGG is what boxing needs!
One Champion per weight class or at least the federations challenging each other every two years! Fight your mandatory then look for the biggest payday
out there. Hell if you loose your federation belt you can drop the winner and have an elimination for the belt. (like we used to do)
Ray.
