So what do you guys think of this featherweight contender?
he's big at the weight but lacks any serious power but makes up for it with hand speed and exceptional footwork. However, he isn't the complete fighter some are making him out to be and for all his defensive abilities, he does get caught a hell of a lot but with every step up he has gotten better and better.
I honestly believe he has the beating of someone like Gradovic.
To me he looks like a mini Miguel Vazquez without that constant hugging that is unbearable in his fights. Nice footwork , movement and combo's and he is not in a rush to go for a stoppage.
I've seen a fair few on here and a few guys I talk to and such hyping him up. I even had one guy try and tell me he beats Donaire by knockout, he was serious too.
It seems most have fairly high expectations of him but I am not seeing it.
Hes a high end Euro level/bordering world class at best really.
I don't really follow the weight but it probably isn't very strong division, you've just had Rocky Juarez crawl back into the top 10 but anybody with a genuine bit of class beats this kid.
I think that Josh Warrington kid has more talent personally but his lack of power will be a real problem at world level. Though I think he is only 21 so still has time to grow, his power might come on a bit yet.
He doesn't do anything particularly impressive but I think he's capable of beating good contenders and I don't think that counts as being average. I can understand with the tag of 'Welsh Mayweather' causes him a bit of hate and he certainly isn't worthy of such a title.
A rich man's Ricky Burns.
:lol1:
I don't think he's a rich mans Ricky Burns he's more like a Featherweight Ricky Burns.
Getting way overhyped in the U.K
What is supposed to be so good about him?
He's alright, but it's difficult to tell how far he'll go, he could be a good contender and may grab himself a title, but he's not elite. He's also got that corny Welsh arrogance about him that Clev has that makes me cringe.
No one said it's out of the ordinary for Sky it doesn't change the fact it's unwarranted.
I don't see how he isn't average. What does he do that's impressive? I mean he has some talent but it's hardly a lot of talent.
where is this over hype idea coming from? the guy has cleared out at domestic level, next step up is world, which is where Sky have positioned him, although they were pushing his power back then lol which was stupid to begin with.
and apart from this thread, who else is actually speaking about selby? no doubt imo selby is a top 10 featherweight and will have a title at some point. in the coming months, we will get to see who the true elite of the division are and we'll get to see selby go up against at least one of them.
Selby certainly ain't average, he's a good talent.
I don't think he'll beat Gradovich but he'll certainly shock a lot of people judging by the general consensus in this thread. I don't understand where the 'overhyped' opinion comes from. I don't even see him talked about on here, unless he's being shit on.
Oh wait... You mean to tell me Sky, who have an investment in him, are hyping him up? You mean Jim Watt, the ever gracious commentator, is potentially chatting shit? Say it ain't so.

I think he needs to start turning his punches over more often. The top guys are not going to respect him if he doesn't put more mustard on his shots. He seems to have good stamina, needs to start using more of it for power shots instead of footwork. He could've taken out Brunker earlier if he stepped on the gas.
what makes you say that apart from the fact that you haven't seen Selby?
Gradovich is widely considered the "weakest link" at the title level at FW, and I think he's vastly underrated. He's solid as a rock, an extremely well rounded boxer. Not saying Lee (of whom I have seen little) can't beat him, but he's not to be underestimated.
He's a B+ fighter that IMO would beat Gradovich and maybe Vetyeka out of the top-level fighters, but against a Walters, Donaire, Mares, Gonzalez etc. wouldn't have enough in his locker. He's a very good, natural boxer though, in spite of the fact his schtick is appalling.
Haha I recall that actually and Jim Watt seemingly astonished at his lack of power against that Aussie.
The whole 'Welsh Mayweather' thing too makes me cringe so hard.
Cringeworthy isn't the word.
He even try's the same style pad work it looks ridiculous :lol1:
After the Stephen Smith KO and he joined the Sky Team shortly after they labelled him a "KO puncher" with big one punch power now the same people (Jim Watt and co) say he doesn't punch very hard :lol1:
I don't see an area he's good in either.
