Man boxing fans are a fickle bunch. Everybody seems to have thier couple of fav fighters and try and discredit any other fighter. It just seems that there isn't one fighter who everyone gives a bit of respect, there's always people who will disparage them.
We watch boxing for entertainment, so why does it matter who beats who if we get a good fight? I was a big Vargas fan when I started watching boxing...the tito fight was the first full fight I watched and I was really impressed with Vargas's heart. He certainley wasn't the super duper obvious best ever boxer at the time, but after watching a few more of his fights, it just didn't seem like he was in a bad one often. I thought tito was really fun to watch as well, it's not impossible to like both. Everyone wrote him off as garbage or exposed when he lost to Bernard....where is the shame in that? As if you can really expose a three division champion as garbage.
People seem to take it so personal about who would win this fight and that and it just kind of seems retarded to me. When good fighters fight someone has to lose and it DOES NOT mean the other fighter is garbage.
It's just kind of weird how certain people have great respect for the all time greats in Robinson, Ali and Co. but can't seem to forgive a current fighter for a loss....all the greats lost.
Not a valid comparison. GGG's "lesser opponents" are eons better than Wilder's.
The only opponent of any substance Wilder has beaten is Scott, and even Scott was coming off a stoppage loss to Chisora.
GGG beat Geale, Macklin, Rosado, Proksa - not exactly the murderers' row, but compared to Wilder's opposition, they are downright great.
Don't even try to argue that the only reason GGG is popular and Wilder is not is because Wilder is with Haymon. We both know it's not true.
Totally agree....as I did say the same thing right below his original post
Haymon's use of his leverage in power is one thing. Making general statements about undefeated records is another.
Deontay wilder and GGG come to mind-the undefeated record is developed solely on beating lesser fighters. Neither has beaten a fighter who is "on their level". That doesn't mean GGG isn't highly skilled and wilder doesn't have power.
Posters are going to like what they like-nothing wrong with that.

There is a clear formula...
The further back in time you go.. The more overrated the boxer.
And the closer you get to present... The more underrated the fighter.
With a few exceptions in the 60's and 70's where some of the boxers became so overrated they transcended the general rule.
That's pretty much boxing in a nut shell! ;)
Depends on the fan, you can only ever judge a fighter on who they fought and beat and what they achieved in the sport during their career. Little point making fantasy fights between eras.
Losses do carry more weight today though because the best seldom fight the best often. A lot more losses in the early period of boxing history because there was one champion and his mandatory was often the next best fighter in that weight class.
Yes, everyone is overrated because fans talk like fighters can't lose when the reality is they all can lose (and do lose, when they consistently fight the best).
This is the answer, but it seems like very few think that way here.
There should be an option to take a discussion to a "sparring thread" so we don't have 60 posts from only two posters, all of which have nothing to do with the initial topic, but just a keyboard battle or whatever. :burnout:
the thunderdome is there for that and resolving other disputes. I am a poster that has derailed threads with inane and repetitive back and forths on occasions. Lately ive tried to avoid this.
I like GGG and if he signed with Haymon and got big fights, then who cares....but I know what you're saying man, there would be a lot of flip flopping going on if that were to happen.
If I remember correctly, Paul Williams was with Haymon and he got matched up fine IMO
The best example has been Canelo. Since he signed with HBO-a number of his critics here on NSB have changed how they post about him-and he hasn't even fought on HBO yet.
Its all in what a posters favorite fighter gets out of it. The Tim Bradley syndrome-when he beat Manny and Provo-he was a robber that sucked and who lost both and wasn't a p4p fighter. when the rematch with Manny was signed-those same guys touted his #3 p4p ranking.
Just how some on NSB operate.
Its NSB so often its a reaction to that specific poster or someone trolling to start a war.

As for wilder and GGG-(I agree with you about wilder) it would be interesting to see what posters, especially those who really like GGG, would say if GGG was with Haymon.

Pretty clear, concise answer to the question.
Leave it to a limey to do so.
Tea sippin' *******.
I honestly don't see how you can compare Wilder and Gennady's records. GGG has fought "lesser fighters" who are ranked top 10 at the time....Wilder fought Malik Scott and that's about it. It drives me how fighters get title shots by not beating anyone in the top 15 of their division. But Wilder could turn out to be a great fighter, who knows?
There's nothing wrong with liking what you like, but I do have a problem with people hating everything else.

I guess, but it works the other way too a lot of the time....and I don't like either. I personally don't think Haymon has been making many good fights lately, but that doesn't mean I think every boxer he has is trash. The problem I have with him, is he seems to muscle networks into accepting fights that they probably wouldn't except otherwise and it just leaves a bad taste after paying for a premium cable network.

Fans overrate and underrate fighters all the time on NSB. For the most part-power guys get overrated and guys that are highly skilled get underrated.
When it comes to winning and losing-if you're an undefeated fighter associated with AL Haymon then posters feel you are undefeated only because you haven't fought "everybody" you should. If you are associated with any other boxing manager/promoter your undefeated record gets more credit-even if it is filled with average and below average opponents.
