I mean, with the exception of Jones vs Griffin 1, he pretty much went a stretch of looking completely unbeatable for NINE YEARS. There isn't a single fighter I can think of that consistently dominated his opponents in such shocking fashion so consistently. And before anyone starts throwing out the PED accusations, I think if the last few years have shown us anything, it's that most of these guys realistically are on some PEDs of some sort. Keep in mind Richard Hall tested for 10x as much in his system as Jones did that night.. how much did it help him? We know Toney was also caught -- how did that work out for him against Jones?
I doubt we see a force like Jones again for a long, long time. If ever.
Other than freakish athleticism, what talent did Roy show? We saw what happened when his reflexes faded.
Whatever guy,
Roy was trained in all aspects of boxing since he was a young child by his father Roy Sr. Some of the training regimens that he had little Roy do as a child would of broke most men. With that being said Roy had technical skill which he showed in the Olympics and as an amateur time and time again, if he didn't he would of never gotten as far as he did becoming a multi-division champion.
Once RJJ left his father he created his own boxing style and dominated until the weight the lost. Don't sit here act like RJJ doesn't have any technical skill, he definitely was taught but he chose not to use it. Jones is also one of the best commentators to analyze a fight and break it down.

His style was built on his strengths. You can't knock him for that.

This... Andro was very weak and needed to be converted in the body. This compared to the designer steroids used by Marion Jones, etc is laughable. I totally agree with your statement. There were other, more potent pro-steroids (legal before 2004) to take at that time.
Speaking on this thread, I don't think I've ever seen , or will see, anyone with the physical gifts Roy had.
I like Pac and all, but imo, it's not close to what Roy was capable of. If Roy had his killer instinct, my god. Roy-Griffin II displayed that instinct . He actually took chances. I truly believe seeing what happened to the G-Man changed him a little.
He was a freak of nature.
That's what happens when you put an athlete in boxing, freakish skills. He probably could've played professional Bball if he went that path, guys like Roy Jones Jr., Tyson, etc. that's that explosiveness of American athletes.
Bro the PED thing was really weak on evidence. He tested positive for androstenedione. He claimed to be taking Ripped Fuel and at the time there was lots of contaminated Ripped Fuel(Twinlabs offered both products). So I give the guy the benefit of doubt. Not to mention, Androstenedione effects were VERY VERY weak. To see ANY effect, he would've had to be taking a huge amount of it. If he was gonna use something, Andro would not be the one to take.

Yeah, RJJ started his career at JMW, and won a title at HW, but he won a trinket by beating John ****ing Ruiz.
Roy chose Ruiz specifically because he was a relatively small, feather-fisted HW.
Mayeather is certainly in his class and he is still undefeated and beating champions twice a year at age 37. Mayweather has never been knocked down and he has won a huge num ber of fights in a row with a world title on the line.
Mayweather doesn't beat people in the same fashion though. RJJ was dangerous, physically he would make you look like you were a fat bum, he moved so quick. Also techinically Floyd did get knocked down but due to reffing incompetence it wasn't counted.
Mayweather just adapted, living a clean life style and has a very smart style which isn't as reliant on pure athleticism. He could box for a number of years IF he wanted to.
No it was Hasim Rachman but RJJ was looking for bigger name fights in the division. When those fights didn't happen that's when RJJ killed himself to drop back down to LHW and was never the same again.
My bad, thanks.

Mayweather is close, but mayweather isn't as genetically gifted as Roy Jones jr... and Mayweather's "dominance" wasn't the same as Roy's (which was overwhelming opponents with pure athleticism)...
We may never see another fighter with that same explosive demonic speed as Roy Jones ever again... maybe once a century sort of fighter.

It was a long time ago, but I thought Klitschko was the mandatory challenger for the belt he took from Ruiz, and Jones gave up the belt? Like I said long time ago, if you know something else, fine by me. It's not something I would hold against Roy anyway.

I Agree, if you wanna know who Roy fought, the answer is everyone willing to fight him except for one guy. The only fellow Roy ever ducked was Vladimir Klitschko. As a super Middleweight who just moved up to find competition, I don't think that should be held against him that much ;)
Oh, I HAVE to hear how you can possibly suggest he ducked Wladimir Klitschko. Please, explain.

Will we ever see a fighter as dominant as RJJ again? | BoxingScene Community
