"I want those dates. I dont care who else fights! Those dates are important to the Mexican People. I want to make history!"
Things are about to become very interesting in the sport! :boxing:
Riight. Sarcasm. I get it. You're trying to say he should fight on a "black" holiday, and stay away from the Mexican holiday. You aren't fooling anyone.
So basically you've been proven to be the idiot and now you want to say it was sarcasm. Thanks for bowing down. Now take the L just like Canelo did when Mayweather schooled him.
you are a funny guy, what ever fits your agenda to make your retarded a$$ feel better. Calling me an idiot but you are the moron who thinks a mexican fighter can't fight on a mexican holiday. Keep reaching clown try harder cause you keep clowning yourself. Entertain me you dumb animal I need some laughs
Its funny seeing all the Floyd nuthuggers get all bent out of shape over this.
Bottom line, make the fight the fans want to see or find a new date.
Floyd can't have it both ways. He constantly reminds us he is the A side and he makes the offers, so when a fight like Pacquiao doesn't happen he needs to take the blame as well.
I'm with you bro!
So instead of waiting a year and continue to build on HBO, GBP wants to make an unnecessary power play that will lose everyone money?
Dont care how much they get but as a business man this is just dumb to me
One single fight wont make a difference for MGM.
Its not like Canelo will say he would never ever wanna fight there after that. You see that is what would make a difference in his career.
MGM been there long before him and will be there long after. There are other top boxers who would love to have all their fights at MGM.
I feel like we are talking about stars on the level of Pac and Floyd. Canelo is far below them. Everyone else is. Pac and Floyd have leverage. I dont think Canelo is there yet IMHO.
All this goes back to the main issue of the dates. Canelo certainly can go head to head with Floyd on those dates. But in the process EVERYONE is losing money because they would all be stuck with a fraction of the already limited boxing fan pool.
But they also have to look long term. Floyd only has 2 more fights while Canelo will be in the game for the next decade or longer. MGM has more to lose long term by having Canelo sign with another venue for his prime years. Canelo filled up the Alamodome and the right fight could probably sell out Cowboy stadium as well. Plus it could sour relationships with Golden Boy and have them fight elsewhere like Barclays.

Why so worried about PPV numbers? Do you guys get a cut?
As consumers this is a good thing for us.
Canelo is not worried, why are Floyd fans so concerned?
Canelo and Oscar lost in the ring. So they have to try and beat Floyd anyway they can. He could try and fight Floyd again... For the right to fight on those dates.
Um ok, let me get this straight. Did not feel like reading 22 pages of comments, but this is so weird. This is the only board I have posted on since ESPN stopped its message boards, and since I have been on here, there has been one thing that has been spoken loudly and frequently on this board iand that is Cotto has been done. Cotto was done after the Margarito fight, and he was definitely done after the Manny fight. So how is it that all of a sudden "you people" are now all of a sudden so pumped for him to fight Alvarez when "you people" have been saying he has been done since 2008?
It has more to lose because they have much more to gain by having Canelo fight there as opposed to him fighting elsewhere.
What might Canelo make by fighting there? Maybe 1 or 2mil more from the site fee's that the MGM may pay. Now how much more in revenue would the MGM pull in on a wknd when Canelo is fighting there as opposed to if he fought elsewhere? The MGM will make thier money regardless but they will always see a big boost in revenue when guys like Floyd, Pacquiao, Canelo are fighting there.

Im not sure how you figure that a casino like MGM, which has MULTIPLE ways of making money, has more to lose than Canelo, who can only make money in the boxing ring.
I think we maybe we just disagree on how big of an attraction Canelo really is.

You have a point but it also reflect on how much the casinos (MGM) also need big named boxers just as much. The casino has much more to lose/gain.

1. If you want to talk about idiocy, how stupid do you have to be to suggest someone hold a boxing match on MLK Day? Do you know anything about MLK?
2. I seriously doubt going head to head with the biggest PPV boxer is a good way to improve your numbers. A fight between Canelo and Cotto can generate serious numbers no matter when the date. But you put that head to head against a Mayweather fight, and simply put, you generate less. Even if he does better numbers than he ever did before, he would likely have done better numbers with the same fight if he stays away from a head to head encounter. It's a dumb business move point blank, but I don't expect someone as simple as you to understand. Carry on.
You truly are a stupid mother****kkker, it's sarcasm, may groupies are so retarded that they don't even know when they are getting clowned on. Funny
thing is that floyd is so dam stupid like his fan base that he would fight on mlk
The idiocy of this whole thread is that you got some pigheaded fools trying to make a case on why a mexican cant fight on a mexican holiday. It makes buiness sense for Canelo since when does making profit not make sense. It hurts floyd more then it does Canelo. Bottom line Canelo is getting one of those days so you better start getting on your knees with Floyd and start praying that Canelo doest fight on both days
FWIW -just one opinion.

Who does the MGM Grand go with for May Cinco weekend, Mayweather/Haymon or Canelo/Oscar?
Brian Campbell (3:08 PM)
I find it hard to believe that both a Cotto-Canelo and Floyd fight will end up truly going head-to-head on PPV on the same night. I believe someone will back down or switch ideas or move to regular TV or SOMETHING to avoid that. Just my two cents. But if it literally came down to this decision for the MGM between the two fights and they were literally forced to choose, I think they would choose Floyd. He's (quite literally) the house fighter and there appears to be a deep relationship there.
Outside of fighting Manny, the only way Floyd could upstage Cotto-Canelo in May is fighting on network TV.— Brian Campbell (@BCampbellESPN) September 23, 2014
Casual or not, it would be foolish to go against Canelo/Cotto on Cinco De Mayo. The sole reason why Floyd fights on those weekends is to try and tap into the hispanic fan base and that ain't happening if Canelo is fighting on the same night. It would defeat the purpose of fighting on those said dates if the audience he's targeting isn't there to be had.
If he truly believes he has the American casuals in his back pocket then just fight on another weekend, more specifically an American holiday. MLK or Independence weekends should be fine. I'm sure his supporters would show up in droves to support him and buy his PPV...
Untrue.
Casinos give the biggest site fees. Because people will usually stay the whole weekend and spend big money the entire weekend. Once you get to a stadium, theres nothing to really spend money on. Thats why the biggest fights are in casinos and not stadiums. Thats why the Staples Center and even Jerry World cannot compete with MGM.
Big name boxers need big name casinos.

This is true and quite impressive but this is why I'm saying it wouldnt be smart for the MGM to snub Canelo as they will need him once Floyd retires after his next 2 fights. Canelo can draw the same crowd fighting in the Staples Center or in Texas. He doesnt necessarily needs the MGM the way Floyd does. The MGM needs Canelo more than he needs the MGM.

I haven't seen that. Macau is significantly larger than Vegas and does do much bigger business. Manny's fights are paired with the most popular Chinese fighter there is. I think its fair to say Zou is the attraction, just not on US ppv..
Manny may finish his career there. Then you just use Canelo and Chavez to replace those dates. It was obvious when Manny got KTFO and the crowd erupted that the bulk of the live gate was their to support JMM. I think canelo and chavez bring those fans in.
Floyd fights, once the numbers are in from this year, will have generated nearly $900 mil US. Do you realize how hard it is for ANYONE to do?

MGM is in Las Vegas, Nevada. Nevada isn't in Mexico. May 5th isn't a holiday in the USA. The PPV buyrate everyone will look at is in the USA.
What does Canelo being a "Mexican superstar" have to with anything?
that doesn't have to do with anything. let's make it clear. canelo/oscar won't be backing down no matter what the repercussions are, ie, ppv, ticket sales, etc. it doesn't matter to them. they are willing to take risks.
obviously, both sides will be affected if they fight on the same date. question is will mayweather take a risk?
doe, don't argue about canelo/oscar giving up those dates. they won't.
