By Jesse James: American slugger James Kirkland was the front runner to being Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next opponent on December 6th. Kirkland was also being considered for Erislandy Lara who recently lost to Canelo Alvarez via split decision. Though Kirkland was definitely Canelo’s first choice, Kirkland’s team was reportedly not interested in Canelo or Lara.
Instead they opted for journeymen Gabriel Rosado who is a tough costumer and has had the bad end of decisions in his last few fights before Bryan Vera. Kirkland is an American favorite and has a very good trainer in Anne Wolf.
Saw the news and decided to share, dont really know how credible the author is...
if true then either kirkland was asking too much(considering is not PPV fight) or he wanted to take a tune up before a big fight, sad this is the second time we dont get canelo-kirkland, this is a must watch war...
I have no problem with ANYONE ignoring Lara, **** that running coward.
It does bother me a bit that they passed on Canelo though... HOWEVER, I understand them not wanting to take on a big name right away after the year long layoff. I think it is a smart move for him and for his career. Anyways, he is not taking a tuneup fight either... Rosado is the real deal.
I wonder if it had to do with weight... Canelo refuses to go up to 160 (we know why.. look at my username). I think Kirkland would have had problems making 154 after the break. His last fight with Tapia took place at 156.
More like he knew canelo was gonna bust him up.Second time now
he ducks canelo. He must be stupid. If he beats canelo theres a good
chance he can fight cotto after.Maybe even floyd.Dude is a dumbazz.
I don't think he's an idiot, well hes not that bright, but, i think it's more like his team knows his limitations and that if he lost to canelo his possibility of getting big fights is gone. They feel he can beat rosado which will lead to another good fight and pay day.
i could understand not being interested in Lara, but Canelo? The proposed split must have been awful.
That's exactly what I think the problem was. He's gonna fold Rosado. It's gonna be a bad night for Philly. First him and then Hopkins is getting stretched out by Drago!
I think they turned down Lara and Canelo because they knew Kirkland would lose. He is an exciting, hard punching fighter who will score impressive KOs over lesser fighters. He will always be in the bottom half of the top 10 contenders. He will probably never win a world title because he is too easy to hit and doesn't have a good chin. He is past 30 and has never won a title and he probably never will. He is not going to get any better.

the fight wont be ppv, so not much of a split, but will understand if kirkland decides to take a tune up fight this year and become an option late next year when a ppv fight is available..
