Former World Heavyweight Champion Evander Holyfield, used some strong words to both chastise and encourage Floyd Mayweather to stop ducking Manny Paquiao, in a Facebook posting yesterday:
"If Floyd retires without doing the super fight with Manny Pacquiao then I wouldn't think of him as a champion. Champions accept any fight put in front of them. But if Mayweather does the fight - win or lose - he will be an all time great and a true champion in my book. And I am sure he would have all the respect from all boxing fans around the world. And he would silence all the critics. But retiring without doing this dream fight that fans have wanted to see for a very long time would be ridiculous."
Mayweather is being heavily pressured now to finally agree to face Manny Pacquiao in the biggest event in boxing history. After defeating Marcos Maidana in a lackluster performance Saturday night, Mayweather has once again used evasive and negative words regarding the long anticipated showdown with his Filippino rival..."...if it happens it happens...I call the shots..."
Holyfield's extremely strong words about Mayweather are the harshest yet by a prominent boxing figure - and they could open the floodgates for an avalanche of criticism - if Mayweather continues to try to duck the clash of titans with Pacquiao, which is hoped to be staged in May of next year.
Holyfield is 100% correct. Champions fight the best, period. Navigating a career coming up is one thing but when a fighter is flirting with all time greatness and you, yourself claim that, you have to fight top opposition. Anything else comes off as very hollow.
Funny how all the pro boxers also think Floyd is responsible for this fight not happening.
I have never came across anyone who wasn't a Flowemowe that doesn't think Floyd is responsible for this fight NOT happening. Real talk.
Holyfield was a no-bs warrior, fought every monster in the HW division and CW before that. I'm sure he's both he's both ashamed & bitter towards Floyd.
