I was 100% sure Canelo-Kirkland would happen in dec but now we hearing Canelo-Clottey. That can only mean Kirkland is in the running for a Cotto fight and turned down Canelo.
I might need to look back at it, but it was when he was listening to a new "adviser" who basically downplayed everybody, including Dunkin.
That is exactly what happened. This whole rumor that Canelo approached Kirkland when he was hurt is false. Kirkland already had successful surgery in April and was approached in June for a fight that wouldn't take place until September. Dunkin, Golden Boy, and everyone seemed to be on board, and Kirkland was offered a career high 1 million dollars for the fight. It was Curtis Meeks who was in Kirklands ear giving him bad advise.
The whole he re injured his shoulder thing was never confirmed. As even Cameron Dunkin was baffled by Kirkland's demands for more money.
Fine with me, it better not be on PPV though. I can't wait to hear the excuses about how much Kirkland sucks after Cotto outclasses and KO's him.
A Kirkland vs Cotto fight is definitely PPV worthy.
This is just my opinion but I think what's happening here is this: Cotto was not going to fight on PPV according to Arum a few months ago. So a lesser fight was more likely. But Dan Rafael said in his Canelo/HBO article and in his chat Friday that the Cotto fight was going to be PPV. HBO doesn't have the money to put both Canelo and Cotto on HBO. So Cotto is now PPV. Which means he needs a better opponent than Lee or Rubio. So you give Kirkland to Cotto instead of Canelo. And you give Canelo a cheaper opponent (Clottey).
Then Canelo's return date would most likely be Dec 6th to be a lead in for Cotto because a PPV right now... just too many this year. Now, it might be better with what they're implying is next (canelo/Cotto), but it might not.
They should prepare for a low selling PPV accordingly.
If it works like that, I could see how a PPV could pass.
Kirkland though, unless you take him out early, you're very prone to being taken down

isn't kirkland more dangerous than rubio?
They are all dangerous to a certain extent, even Lee. I think Rubio and Lee were dangerous because they are MWs and both have significant power and great uppercuts. Rubio of course would be trying to do his best Margarito impression. Lee isn't much on the inside...but he is good at chopping up fighters who try to get close, that's were Miguel has been hurt before by other southpaws.
Still, the thread is speculation but it does seem to make sense for a NY venue, PPV, he's not 160 but can make whatever weight they're asking for. Not a gimmie fight either so i'd be for it
A dangerous fight could jeopardize a potential showdown with Canelo so a non-dangerous fight seems likely.
roach said in a video before ggg/gaele that kirkland would be a walk in the park for cotto. they don't view him as that dangerous apparently.
who said cotto didn't want a dangerous fight?
that's the misconception here. just b/c he didn't want to fight rubio or lee doesn't mean he wants something easier. nobody cares about those 2. if he fights on ppv he needs a good name to fight. james kirkland is the only possible opponent for a ppv fight unless they go with bradley, which i doubt.

Kirkland would destroy Cotto. Chewed up and spit out. I hope Kirkland does something soon. I don't know what the hell he's waiting on.
I hope he didn't fall into the mentality of just waiting for that one big fight to come around
Would have preferred Kirkland to take a fight before against someone like Maciel. Coming in on a 12 month lay off is not ideal when you're fighting either Canelo or Cotto.
This was from James after rejecting the Canelo fight. Keep in mind he just had surgery on his shoulder:
"If I'm going to take a fight like this, and I've got one arm, and it takes time to rehabiltate and to train, then pay me for that," said Kirkland. "I would do that, but pay me for it. If my career is over with after this fight, I want to make sure that I don't walk away with nothing."
They came to an agreement before though, yea?
It was a six figure deal they agree too, then he re-injured his shoulder in his first workout, proposed a return to October/November and then 2 million bucks.
He was saying if I'm injured, make it worth my while.
BRB
Well let's be fair about this. The only time Kirkland made an issue about money that I'm aware of is when he had a shoulder injury and Canelo offered him a fight. Kirkland said he was injured but he would fight injured for a lot of money. Basically saying I'm in no condition to fight right now, but hell, give me enough money and I'll fight with one arm. So it's not as if Kirkland was being some sort of diva, he had a legit injury.
