I think there's a real fan boy or fanticism that has developed in the younger generation towards actors, singers, athletes. Beiber could decapitate someone and his fans will honestly defend him. Same goes with mayweather and pacquiao. The fanatics of both these fighters were drawn to the sport because of them so they have some bizarre fascination with them. Sadly it's just how people in our society are now, not just boxing fans.
