"You know, everybody is giving Garcia a tough time. I mean, it's okay to get a tune-up bout just to stay sharp. It's a tune-up bout to stay sharp and keep the tools tight. You need fights like that. He's still young and he needs fights like that," stated undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, who came to the defense of WBC & WBA welterweight champion Danny Garcia during a recent conversation with FightHype.com. Garcia received a lot of criticism leading up to and after his 2nd round knockout of Rod Salka, an unranked lightweight who many felt never deserved a shot to face the unified jr. welterweight champion. The fight was considered to be a mismatch the moment it was announced, prompting the sanctioning bodies to refuse to approve Salka as a legitimate title challenger. Although fans and media alike were extremely critical of the matchup, Mayweather explains that bouts like that are a necessity for young fighters who have participated in consecutive difficult fights.
"A guy my age, I can't afford a tune-up bout. You know, a tune-up bout for me is $32 million. I gotta get $32 million for a tune-up bout," Mayweather continued. "But like I said before, everybody is coming down so hard on Danny Garcia. I'm proud of Danny Garcia. He's going out there and doing what he has to do. He needed a tune-up bout because he just had fought a tough bout in Puerto Rico. I think it could have gone the other way, but I'm glad he got the victory. But like I said before, after that tough fight in Puerto Rico, he needed a tune-up bout."

If Danny hadn't have gotten the decision vs Herrera than no one would've minded the Salka tune-up.
When money from the budget is being wasted on such ridiculous mismatches, plenty of people will mind.
Danny has had tougher fights at school than Salka gave him...
He needed an easy win simply because of the risk of losing the '0' against a tougher more credible opponent after the gift against Herrera.
Floyd is just saying whatever Haymon tells him...
I get what he is saying, the idea of a tune-up fight isnt wrong...but its totally wrong if you only fight 2 times a year, that is totally unacceptable and even more if you consider that the Herrera bout itself was considered as a soft-touch...
I looked into the future and saw Salsa's compubox numbers versus Floyd
Roderick "The Picante" Salsa
Total punches: 5 of 564
Jabs: 4 of 561
Power punches: 1 of 3
Nope, that will be Garcia, hence the defense of the cherry pick.
Man, I can't believe Floyd fans protecting Floyd's every word. Some of you were destroying that cherry pick of a fight. Now that Floyd said something, Floyd fans need to sugar coat it ..............
Well, actually I can believe it ......

Garcia is not gonna fight Peterson...
Mayweather fought Judah after he just lost to Baldomir.
True but that isn't a trend of his, unlike pacquiao. That was like one within the last ten years for Floyd. If pacquiao is not dragging up a guy from a lower weight class, he's either fighting them at a CW or coming off a loss, credit to him for the Bradley fight though.
Yea about that... he isn't even fighting Peterson next. It's the Al Haymon way. He lets his fights "marinate" longer than Gamboa/Lopez. Herrera already ruined that fight so they have to start all over again.
Then unless Garcia gets an equally impressive win, he isn't fighting Mayweather and no one needs to worry about that fight happening.
Garcia won't fight Mayweather unless he fights and beats Peterson impressively. Say what you want about Mayweather, but he doesn't fight guys coming off losing to Herrera and cherry picking Rob Salsa.

So Garcia Vs Floyd in May 2015 whilst Khan & Brook fight?
fine by me...as long as Floyd doesn't ruin Brook Khan.
Pretty sure Haymon & co sh8t their pants after hearing Herrera beat Garcia so Salka was a quick protection response to reserve Danny boy for Floyd's easy pickings.
Honestly they should have stuck him in with Peterson instead of bieng cowards...He'd probably knock Peterson out.

Floyd huggers coming out of the woodwork to defend salka, lmao
I've been on here saying the same thing for months. Long before Floyd hopped on my bandwagon.
Boxers would do well to fight more often and to mix hard fights with easier ones. It would keep them sharper.
HOFers, greats, good fighters, so-so fighters all have tune ups.
But for some reason this Garcia gets put on a pedestal above all and he should not have a tuneup:smashfrea wtf:cop:
julio cesar chavez didnt only fight twice a year
