I keep wondering how toney got out of shape in what seemed like a short space of time. He used to be in pretty decent shape early on in his career.
Did he just stop doing roadwork? I've seen videos of him doing strength and conditioning and the guy seems pretty strong even now.
The only thing I can think of is that his style never required him to be athletic so he just did whatever he liked. Even though he sparred hundreds of rounds and fought often his style doesn't require incredible athleticism.

KFC and chocolate ice cream
Exactly. He was so ridiculously talented and such an instinctive understanding of the sport that all that other stuff didn't seem necessary. Imagine what he could have been if he had the right mentality as well.
He had the right mentality for fighting that's for damn sure. Just not for training, just wanted to rumble in sparring all week then fight in the ring. I remember reading an article where arum said he tried to keep him active just to keep his weight down. If only people fought as often as toney nowadays. Provided they aren't past their prime like toney is nowadays
Toney's skills are so off the chart that the dude could not train but do alittle sparring and jump rope, no dieting, and still be able to hang within anyone including natural heavyweights

He jumped rope? I mean it makes sense considering how good his coordination was but I can't imagine him doing so without hurting his shins due to the excess weight.

Another thing which has been mentioned is the brain damage factor. Sometimes you can have weight fluctuations. Also him having to cut so much to make 160 or even 168 would have caused a lot of damage to his brain when he gets hit. He has a good chin so he takes more punishment. That, and too much hard sparring is a recipe for disaster.
Nah...you probably just looked strange period....nobody gave a f**k what you did,or did not eat.
As for James,he is a fatty who has never taken care of himself....probably won't be with us much longer.
Lol I mean the servers found it strange when me and family members would order what they considered small portions. A small in America is like a medium or even a large in the uk so we could barely manage small portions. Had to share some meals at times because we couldn't order for one.
The thing is james still exercises. He just always seems to be heavy. Guess she can't change now since the damage is done.
The thing is, and I don't want to cause offence, I can't even fathom the portions that Americans eat. I only just thought about it but maybe that also has something to do with it as well as his eating disorder.
I mean looking back I must have looked pretty strange when I visited America for a week. They must have wondered why I was eating such small portions. The poster above mentioned an extra large soda. In the uk ( even though we can be pretty unhealthy) that could be shared among six people! When people say toney ate a lot I keep forgetting the portion sizes he would have had.....
How did any trainer tolerate him now that I think about it? I like toney, he 's talented and can be funny at times. But he was known to be abusive and never seemed to listen to his trainers.

He loves to eat lots of rich food and does not have the will power to eat less. He used to be able to control his eating when he was much younger but he has an eating disorder he can't control and he will probably be a very fat man until the day he dies. He had so much talent that he was able to do well as a grossly overweight heavyweight but his proper fighting weight has never been more than 175. Even when he fought at 200 pounds he still had rolls of fat.
