Why did the reff not stop this fight? I just watched the fight for the second time since it happened and it is a massacre. If Briggs has any brain damage later in his life, we will know why(I hope he does not).

By the way he acts I say he does
He's one of the worst.
Sometimes Lewis stops fights early, depending upon who he wants to win.
Briggs collapsed and was hospitalized after that fight. He seems crazy now, perhaps he's brain-damaged.
He could have been seriously disabled like Magomed.
and he chose not to count 2 knockdowns in hopkins vs pascal
just a horrific ref,
in fact ill list him in a atrocious officials thread
Well obviously Briggs DOES have brain damage now.
The proof is there. He was never this funny BEFORE the Vitali beaing :lo1:
The fight was allegedly not stopped, and I agree, because of American nationalism.
I was determined by the "boxing high command" so to speak that the Euro's could not be seen to have demolished the last American champion so thoroughly. Briggs had to make the distance at all costs. This fight was never going to be stopped under any circumstances, only if Briggs was rendered unconscious.
It was a very calculated decision but at Briggs' expense and danger.
The Klitchkos take the easiest fights possible unless there's a huge upside (Haye) or they're forced to by sanctioning bodies (Povetkin, Pulev).
As Fury says, they're "strictly business".
What fights did they avoid?
I think a better question is why was this fight allowed to happen?

not sure how much faith you can put into what briggs has to say. he also said foreman and vitali hit harder than lennox while lennox pretty much starched him while big George or vitali couldn't as much as put him on his trunks. doesn't make much sense to me
Not much.. I don't think Vitali hits harder than Forman. As for Lennox I would say it's close.
However I believe that Briggs that fought Vitali either was on something or he grow up somehow... He looked way tougher than when he fought Lennox/Foreman.
It should have been stopped. But Briggs always did something to prevent the stoppage. The later stage of the fight he would just talk 'I am not hurt...'
but it was a BAD beating, the worst I seen.
after the fight briggs said "Ive faced George Foreman and Lennox Lewis, but Vitali is better than both of them."
Vitali definitely gave him much worst beating than Lennox did, although Lennox KOed him.

Ian John Lewis honored Shannon Briggs' personal request that the fight not be stopped unless he was lying cold on the canvas, because it was going to be his final shot at the title.
Call it unprofessional, call it respect, whatever. Briggs injured his arm and could not properly fight or defend, but still, somehow, went the 12.
briggs may have injured his arm but he makes excuses for every single one of his fights won or lost so its hard to figure it having anything to do with the outcome of the fight. I agree he did show incredible heart tho,,,i'll give him that. he could have easily quit but he kept on
A lot more durable, better conditioning - not enough for me classify him as being better.
I agree. wlad is clearly more technically sound. if he had vitali's chin,,toughness and work rate it would be scary

How does a sore arm stop you slipping punches?

Much better fighter.. stronger chin.. better reflexes.. always on the offensive.. no questions asked... I could go on & on. Vitali never allows anyone to dictate how he's going to fight.
He can fight on the backfoot...doesn't have to resort to hugging to save his chin when danger is near. Vitali is the natural born fighter here. His kickboxing pedigree taught him how to fight & protect himself in a manner Wlad never could.
Briggs may never have been staggered, but there was a point in that 12th round where you started getting a sickly feeling. I can't believe Briggs' corner didn't throw in the towel. There was no way he should have heard the final bell.
Briggs was hurt bad and if I recall lost all the money he made on medical bills after the fight.
But there wasn't really one big moment or huge punch. Vitali doesn't wait for that one big punch the way Wlad does. He just puts out a high volume of awkward shots. Makes it hard for the ref to know when to step in.
Vitali doesn't panic & swing for the fences like most ko artists do... he basically clubs you with hard shots from every angle imaginable. He KNOWS you won't be able to take it for the full 12 rds & just waits until you submit. If you ask me this is more barbaric than putting your lights out with one shot which he's capable of doing so on numerous occasions given the opponent.
