Just got around to seeing his fight vs Salka last night on youtube as I refused to give Showtime any ratings for this farce.
One thing I notice about Garcia and I've mentioned it here before, is that although people label him a "counterpuncher", he really isnt. What Danny does is throw WITH his opponent. The minute Danny sees his opponent let his hands go, Danny lets his go as well with little regard for defense. That to me isnt counterpunching. Counterpunching is when you make your opponent miss then make him pay. Floyd is a counterpuncher. JMM is a counterpuncher. Danny Garcia is not a counterpuncher. He's more of a hail mary puncher and has been fortunate enough to land and be able to take a better shot than most of his opponents. If you look at his KO of Khan, that too was a hail mary punch where he just swung when he saw Khan swinging. Hey, I'm not knocking the kid. Whatever works for him works. I just dont understand him being labeled a "counterpuncher" when he clearly isnt one.
Whether you think he looks good doing it or not, he technically counter punches in its most literal sense. He's not Hopkins Mayweather or Rigondeaux, but he does counterpunch.
Watch the Morales KO, Garcia slips the left and returns with the his own. Had Morales not throw his left Garcia likely wouldn't have throw his just after. He was 'countering' Morales first left. Therefore he counter punched.
Just because he doesn't fit a very narrow definition of what you describe as a counter puncher doesn't mean he isn't one. There is more than one way to counter punch, Mayweathers check hook against Hatton is a counter, he sees Hattons left coming, moves to the side and throws a hook 'countering' his punch and movement. Just like Toneys shoulder roll right hand over the top is a counter punch. Ali's pull counter against Liston is a counter punch. When Jersey Joe Walcott slips Ezzards Charles punch and throws the uppercut its a counter.
It is not narrow to make a distinction between different degrees of skill when executing a counter punch. There are Better and worse counter punchers and catching someone a certain way does make for a difference in skill.
I tend to agree with the camp that says you can call Garcia a counter puncher albeit not a very good one.
Someone like Pac who feints alot will have a field day with Garcia as he throws the second he sees his opponent's arms move.
Garcia doesn't do that, I'm in the very small minority too but Garcia beats Pacquiao at this point.
Incidentally i was thinking about this when i watch the highlights of his fight with Lucas Matthyse and I really do class him as a counterpuncher, He was basically punching with Lucas everytime he saw Lucas hands go, having said that it takes a good boxer to do that, it means he had to be alert, quick , super focus and he had to have a very very good reaction to punch with someone, I watch him throwing punches a split half seconds after Lucas has let his hands go and he was able to avoid some of Lucas punches and land his punches.
No way! He just closes his eyes every time he fights. He is the luckiest fighter ever!

Garcia name shouldn't ever be in same sentence that Marquez is mentioned, *s*h*i*t* is insulting to Marquez, Garcia counter punching skills are mediocre on his best day
"Iwouldn't even call what .... Etc..." <---- That's the problem
Your'e under the impression that your opinion holds some sort of weight.. IT DOESN'T ! . Wether you consider it to be counter punching or not does change the fact that IT IS! the fact that you're trying to even argue that fact shows how little you know about the sport... I'm sure you know all the "players" but you need to brush up on the game.
School is in session!!...solid post!!
Danny Garcia is a counter puncher. Throwing with your opponent is counter punching, esp when ur throwing hooks and they are throwing jabs. This is boxing, there's little to no luck involved in it. It's all styles at the top, and Garcia's style is very effective for him. He has excellent timing and a great power and chin to go along with it. Hes going to be a top fighter for quite some time. Deal with it.
Excellent post bro....green :fing02:
I would call it "Closed Eye Hooking".
Other than "Hail Mary", you can also call it the "Fuuk It" punch.
It's been quite ffective to be called his "money punch".
.
He does counter , his left hook to counter a right hand is his favorite counter, and it works.
His problem more than countering is defense .
He is not a pure boxer, he is more of an aggressive counter puncher, eager to eat some shot to get mid range and land his trademark left hook.
In other words, he's not about the sweet science , hit and not get hit . His mentality is a brawler mentality, but he does counter punch.
Don't mean to call shots but anyone saying good post or agreeing just doesn't know what they are talking about..
A counterpunch in generally a punch thrown to counteract your opponents own punch whether it's thrown after your opponent misses or while he is throwing a punch. I understand your post was meant to sort of down Garcia but in actuality it shines a light on something he does very well.
Yep you're right but people just don't seem to get it because they hear the term "countering" and use it as a umbrella term
What Marquez sparked Pacquiao with is the epitome of a counterpunch for anyone not clear
Parrying a jab and replying with a right hand, for example, is counter attacking
how many guys does garcia have to drop with the same punch before people stop calling it lucky?
I think he should embrace it and start calling himself Lucky Garcia
F the haters

No your the idiot. Lucas was winning the first half of the fight. Angel knew. Go back and watch boy.
This. Lucas was winning pretty soundly in my book. He was slipping the hook at will and was doing a really good job landing a straight and ducking the hook. Things went south pretty fast, though.
