Hello this is my first post. Im a huge boxing fan and was thinking about actually competing in the future( just amatuer though). Can you guys tell me what its like. How dangerous is it. People say that the head gear doesnt really protect you. Im 19 yrs old and in college. I have no prior boxing training but id say that im very physically fit as ive played football and ran track back in highschool, and i also started wrestling as club sport in college. Do you think i can make it at such a late starting age. I just really love boxing its litterally all i think about lmao. Any advice?
lol. studies, you say?
headgear diminishes the impact of punches. it spreads the area of impact, and slows down the rate of deceleration.
don't spar without it.
Yes, studies.

I still wouldn't spar without because I don't wanna get cut or bruised.

Nah, believe it or not its true. I know it seems counter intuitive. The Knockout is caused by the force of the mass of your head moving jarring your brain, the headgear raises the weight of your head and thusly causes more brain injury when it is moved. The study he's referring to found that at the elite level fighters with head gear were more often concussed than fighters without it. Word is that the next olympic games they'll be ditching the headgear because of this. Headgear mostly protects against cuts and bruises. So it feels like it hurts less when your boxing which leads to the feeling that your being damaged less when in reality your brain is taking more of a beating.
Not only the headgear doesn't diminish the impact of the punches, some studies show it actually increases it. And yes you can get KO'd with headgear and 12Oz gloves on, I don't mean just going down for the count or being staggered and the ref waves it off, I mean getting put to sleep. Happened at my gym.

before you think about taking an amateur fight, you need to try boxing.
you can't even wrap your hands, yet, man. you don't know hojw you're going to like boxing until you try it.
some people literally get hit and go home.

Dude stop lying no body competes in the Golden Gloves with a 6 and 2 record. Golden Gloves start in their District State and National.
Find a good gym with a solid reputation.. I have seem a lot of coaches grab guys off the street and a month later they are fighting in the amateurs with no real clue as to what they are doing.. The fighter takes a beating, gets disheartened and quits the sport..
A good coach will drill home the fundamentals and have you gain a lot of experience sparring before you start competing. And a good coach will match you evenly once you do start competing
Amateurs compared to pros, it's a lot faster paced and shorter.. There is hardly any feeling out process in an amateur fight, you gotta go hard and fast or the other guy will
If you want to be any good than spar every chance that you get. That Mac Truck feeling is something that you work through the very next day and the day after that, etc. Until you become the 'Mac Truck'.:boxing:
I dig the way you added to the analogy. I understand what you mean, sparring is really the best way to actually learn to box, imo.
It's just that, I usually tried to get in all my sparring in one day (usually 2 or 3 matches) then recover. I rarely would spar during the week and if I did it, it would only be one day, one match, and after my workout. Those were interesting. Having that "mac truck" feeling all week really sucked. haha
I hope this kid has a great experience.
Amateur boxing was built to teach young fighters technique, and how to land punches.
Which is why the scoring is based solely on punches landed, And not about hard punches or knock downs.
but that doesn't mean you can't get KTFO.

Welcome!
Yes the headgear helps. Don't get crazy and spar without one. You could suffer some serious damage without it. I wouldn't over do the sparring. I did it every Saturday and felt like I got hit by a mac truck every Sunday.
You're not too old. Just be smart. I fought amateur and got out after a few fights because I knew I wasn't going to make it a career. I just wanted to experience the sport. ya know? Know your limits. Sparring will help you find yours.
Go to a legit boxing gym and hire a legit boxing coach. He will teach you the fundamentals.
Run your bum off. Even 3 rounds are tough.
I'm obsessed too. You found the right place bud. Everybody I've encountered around here is nuts over it too. "Garcia's Dad" warned me when I came in, so I'll do the same for you. You will sometimes be hit with some seriously negative comments, don't blow a gasket and keep it above the belt line.
Have fun and be safe in your boxing journey!
Definitely have to agree with this, I competed I had a record of 6-2. The head gear does protect you and the gloves you fight with have a lot more padding then pro gloves. I had to stop due to a back injury and the politics involved in it is just crazy. Everytime I fought for the golden gloves I always beat the guys up and they gave them the win. I fought at 123 Lbs so there aren't that many people in it. But weight classes from 140 lbs and up is filled with competition. That's why you really have to train hard to give the guy a beating.

Here's some advice if your in College don't box you can still ruin your brain. I box 6 years in the amateurs you still take heavy shots to the head. I only recommend boxing to youth who are on the wrong path and need something to correct the path their going. Anyone who tells you different has never boxed like most retards on this site they think their boxers cause they watch Mayweather fights and put cheap Wal-Mart gloves and box with their home boys in the back yard

It's the toughest amateur sport that you will find, truth.:boxing:
It is safe..the headgear is used to prevent cuts,it takes a little from the impact but you still get headaches..it was and is a great learning experience and is something you can talk about for the rest of your life
I'll answer the question, I was in the ams for quite some time and it's damn fun. But you gotta be ready for sacrifice, time, family, certain foods and drink, all that **** but as you've already competed in other sports you know that already.
now the headgear isn't full proof, you can and will get KD, you will get hurt and maybe stunned. But that's boxing.
