MANILA, Philippines – Chris Algieri believes that Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez have fought too many bouts against each other and it is time for a "new blood" like him to take center stage.
The new WBO junior welterweight champion admitted that he has been a fan of the Pacquiao-Marquez rivalry. He, however, said that after four fights, boxing fans like him have already seen enough of the two boxers waging war at each other.
“Even as a fan, I don't wanna see the fight. These guys had way too many rounds together, let's get some now blood in there,” Algieri said in an interview with Boxing Scene.
The New Yorker thinks he has a big chance at landing a fight against Pacquiao because he believes that the Filipino has limited options.
The leading candidates for Pacquiao's November 23 fight date are Marquez, Ruslan Provodnikov, Carlos Abregu and Algieri.
Marquez seems non-committal about a fifth fight with Pacquiao, while Abregu, although a No. 1 welterweight contender, is a relatively obscure fighter.
Provodnikov has name recall, but he suffered an upset loss against Algieri.
“I think we got a really good chance of getting this fight, we talked about it before the fight, and now after the fight it's definitely very possible, I don't know who else really is in the running,” said the Long Island native.
Algieri, however, admitted that he still does not know his status regarding the Pacquiao sweepstakes.
Top Rank’s Bob Arum reportedly approached him after his split-decision win over Provodnikov and promised that he’ll work out a bout between him and Pacquiao.
But Algieri said he has yet to see if his promoters will actually be able to get him the fight.
“Boxing never sleeps, those gears are turning and we'll clear out what's next… we'll be ready no matter what.”

uncle bob please try to work with odlh and give pac a better opponent, i.e. porter, thurman... or at least maidana. :puppy_dog
i wouldn’t support pac’s ppv if he fights one of tr fighters. i’m tired of rematches and the only way i’d support a pac ppv is if he gets a fight with one of gbp/gaymon fighters.
that's all...
Pac/Marquez is a bad idea until they're in the ring giving us a FOTY candidate. From a boxer's perspective, I agree with the "new blood" argument. It's difficult to create stars if the young guys don't get a shot at the established guys.
truth be told, algeri deserve this fight with manny. i mean wtf did the other opponents in line for manny have done in order to even be consider? marquez, ruslan, how does any of these 2 deserve it more than algeri? fuck whinquez he shouldnt even be consider anymore. biiatch ass cried for years wanting a rematch and when he finally 1up manny he doesnt wanna return the favor. and before anyone says well manny made him wait, blah blah blah. mutha fucka manny had bigger fish to fried and shiiet to accomplished. who the fuck is marquez gonna fight that will bring in the most money besides manny? and whats left for marquez to accomplished this late in his career?
I ain't mad at him. He's just trying to get out there and get some big money. I'd hate like hell for the fight to be made, but have to admire the effort.
i really hate the fact that Chris Algieri is part of boxing news
Im not a fan of a pac/algieri showdown but algieri did earn it the hard way, he slayed the russian monster...with one eye.
The only way that I wouldn't mind seeing Pac vs Algeri is, if Pac fought Chris on the cofeature, then turned right around and fought somebody else in the main event. :boxing:
Well, yes, we have seen Pac in the ring many times against JMM. And maybe we need to see a different match-up. But with Algieri? I don't think so. I want to see Pac in the ring with someone with more power. Guys like Thurman or Porter. I understand what Chris is trying to do, but it's just not a compelling match up. Yet.
