MANILA, Philippines – The camp of Chris Algieri had preliminary discussions with Top Rank boss Bob Arum regarding a possible clash with Manny Pacquiao, reports said Wednesday.
Algieri, who pulled off a surprising win against Russian slugger Ruslan Provodnikov over the weekend, has become one of the prime candidates for Pacquiao’s next fight in November.
Although he has a rematch clause for the Provodnikov fight, the now WBO junior welterweight champion can still fight in an interim bout, said his promoter Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing.
"They can exercise the rematch clause, but my interpretation is that it doesn't preclude me and our fighter from taking an interim,” explained DeGuardia in ******. “He's got three options, and one of them can be a rematch, and that doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be the first fight."
"I've already begun conversations with Top Rank about Pacquiao, and we'll see where that leads. I think that when all is said and done, marketability-wise, Chris Algieri has proven himself to be a tremendously marketable fighter."
Provodnikov decked Algieri twice in the first round, but the New Yorker was able to weather the storm and boxed his way to a split decision win over the Siberian Rocky.
Algieri is included in the short list of opponents being considered for Pacquiao. The others include Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez and Argentina’s Carlos Abregu.
If Arum fails to convince Marquez into a fifth fight with the Filipino superstar, Pacquiao might have to choose between Algieri and Abregu.

arum needs to retire or he needs to let go of pac from his clutches. these fights are the worst ever match-ups in the entire history of boxing.
not buying to these shits from arum. :nonono:
Manny fought Morales for the first time nine years ago.
How long did you guys think this was all going to last?
It's Arums job to make Manny the most money he can before he retires. After losing two fights back-to-back, Arum isn't going to put Manny in a position to lose again.
Manny was broke a few years ago. I'm not being condescending or having a laugh or accusing Manny of ducking anyone, but his prime is in the rear-view. At this point in his career the goal is to fight the easiest fights for the most money and as quickly as possible. Arum's cashing in on Mannys name and status (like he has been) based on all the great wars Pac gave us over the years to get the fans to fork over the cash.
It's just business and life, guys. Outside of another Marquez fight, they're going to be looking for Algeri type opponents as Manny works his way towards retirement. Dont be bitter, don't talk ****, just accept the reality; Manny isn't a young guy anymore and theyre not going to match him up like one, either.
And you saw Manny's books to prove this, or are you just repeating rumors? Admit you don't really know sh1t about how much Pacquiao had or has in his bank account, nor do you know what kind of fighters he will face before he retires.
TMT should be talking to Algieri. They can sell him as the great white hype, and he has his 0. It'll do numbers. Makes better sense to send him out to China to get dealt with by Pac Man imo
I'm 100% against this fight but if Arum wants to push it he better a) make it free and b) put on a great undercard.
Arum doesn't know how to do either of those.
completely disagree. algeri could never and i repeat never be a cash cow. arum is just up to his usual tricks.
completely agree with you. i don't see the personality for that.
i don't want pac to follow fraud's cherry picking ways.
that's all...
Really? You have it backwards. Pac has always been picking Floyd's discarded cherry picks. Get your facts straight, little man.

i get what u're saying but i disagree. how is picking easy opponents like algeri will make pac any money, if anything they will lose money on it. if they were cashing him out they would start putting him in with oppoenents that will draw. it doesnt matter if pac loses his name is big enough to still be able to draw, they can still throw him in with a creditble opponent and the fight will do good. like u said arum is cashing out on manny's name, i just dont understand ur concept of picking easy fights with names like algeri to make pac the best money possible at the moment before he retired.

Oscar lost and still sold ppv.
Aura of invincibility is gone from PAC anyway after Marquez ko.
Hardcore Fans don't care about losing and casuals only care if you are unbeaten but you really think they know a guys record?
I understand risk and reward.
Ideal situation is match the cash cow in a good style match up or a hypejob coming off a victory.
But I think casual fans are getting wiser

slow clap, bro.
Oscar said pacquaio vs maidana is possible at HOF. Was he just talking out of his ass ?
pacquiao maidana would be such a hellish fight. i can't see arum putting manny in with a puncher like that without a huge reward, or control of the winner of the fight.
disgusting if true.
sometimes they leak crap like this out to make it seem like a fighter is legit. news like this is good for algieri's PR.
i really hope pacquiao doens't fight chris freaking algieri on ppv.
