Coach Sergio Martinez also referred to the decision not to go out and fight the tenth round, which decreed the defeat of "Maravilla": "Two or three rounds back I was seeing that he was not right and it is my decision, I know what I have done, I will not let Sergio take a beating Sergio. Man than a boxer He is my brother, my friend, is all ... I made the decision I had to take and I'll take care of everything. "
Finally, in the development of the fight described. "Could never control it I told him in the first round, to work the jab and move, I saw that did not work ... I told him to control the fight and that didn't work. His legs were not the same, his knees went every with way way and I stopped it I could not him receive another blow or let him end on the floor
But knee surgeries at age 40 arent serious doe.
:rofl::rofl::rofl:
Another one of these threads. What's the point? You'll have people who agree with you, and you'll have people who won't. At this point, you're not gonna sway anyone. Anyway, yes Sergio should retire.
There should be a pamphlet issued to fighters when they turn pro. They sign a form indicating their boxing style, and the pamphlet they receive will help guide them through their career as a fighter.
Sergio would have gotten the "pure athleticism" pamphlet (the one with Roy Jones printed on the cover) where it says in big, bold, red letters:
You will one day grow old in one night, and you will face the urge to continue fighting despite this, but you must be strong enough, wise enough, and have enough financial planning to step away from the sport at that moment.
agree with his style he should retire
he needs to fight bums in argentina and retire happy with all the men he wants if he keeps going against top comp he will be the Argentine Roy Jones with bad knees
LOL, you dudes are too funny. He's married man....for the second time.

I doubt Sergio could even last against a tune up with those knees.
If Sergio fights even ONE more fight and looks half decent i will take what i said back.
But as it stands the Martinez that fought Cotto was completely shot.

How much will his people want to watch him coming off of this defeat?
They'll back him in this, especially if it's a farewell fight.
He repped them well
I noticed how he was whipping his head under the rope instead of bending his knees i was like wtf..about a minute in i knew he was done...great fighter one of my favs but its over for la maravilla
I saw that in the training vids too and thought it was strange that he wasn't clearing the lines.
He should retire but I have a feeling he won't. If he was willing to fight like that once he may be willing to do it again. when you look back despite being recognized as a division king, he didn't really get that many big paydays. I wonder what his financial situation is like.
DiBella talked about his financial situation like Sergio was extremely frugal or something. He stated that he didn't have to work another day for the rest of his life if he didn't want to, that he was very wise with his money. Not sure how much he has but it sounded like he was well off.
If you've followed Sergio's career you would know he'd never make that excuse in defeat. Even when probed for the dispicable judge in the p will 1 fight he kept it classy.
It doesn't take a trained eye to see he was pushing his punches and unable to move or step in hard/in any sharp directions.
Hell... Even Roach has said he isnt the same as in the chavez fight...
Sergio's done. No amount of wishful thinking by us will change that. No anount of wishful thinking will give us acotto fans the real satisfaction of beating him at his best.
The general thought was Sergio still had ENOUGH but that if he didnt, he was going to lose. He had nothing, and this was the result.
It's not too often that the lineal champ is no longer considered the best fighter in his class due to injuries...that alone tells you how iffy Sergio was
For effs sake dude couldnt even run in training or bend enough to duck a stationary rope. :/...

Speaking of "shot," did you see the shot Cotto landed to his jaw? Had him prancing around like a baby deer taking his first steps.
Not nice punching pensioners in the face. Not a good look. :nonono:
so when sergio says he just got caught with a good punch and it wasn't about the knees everyone says "oh he's lying, he doesn't know anything", but when it's his trainer that says it's the knees everyone jumps on it like "see!"
disgusting.
i'd rather listen to the fighter who actually knows whether his knees were good that night or not.

Martinez looked incredibly weak in there. It's like after the Chavez fight, he lost his strength. That fight really took something out of Martinez. It left a depleted Martinez who could barely beat Murray. Add in another knee surgery, and 14 months off, and you're left with the shell who fought Cotto.
I doubt the Chavez fight had much to do with it. Martinez did not take sustained punishment in that fight; he took a handful of punches (very good punches, certainly) in the last minute and a half. In that fight he took less than a fifth of the punishment he took in the first Williams fight.
The Murray fight was confirmation that the Martinez of old was gone. Very few fighters can fight at the elite level at 38 or older. I think that fight could have gone either way, but at least he had enough left to compete with the top dogs in the division (Golovkin excepted). He wasn't wearing any knee protection in that fight, which suggests that at the time of the Murray fight it was mainly age which was effecting him. I don't know what happened in the interim between that fight and the Cotto one, but Martinez looked to have the legs of a granny in the latter.
Like 75% of NSB thought Sergio would ktfo Cotto.
I thought it would be a close fight but was leaning towards Cotto; now everyone is talking about Sergio's knees.
Welp :lol1:
Yup. While some where saying Cotto's banking on Sergio's health, Sergio was banking on Cotto's size. I've heard it all the week leading to the fight "Cotto is too small for the Jr MW alone Sergio's too big".

After seeing sergio move and have nothing on his shots because they had no leverage i think anyone who doesn't want to see the guy get hurt wants him to retire.
