Will undeserving challengers get a shot in a pointless, "money fight" (Canelo) ?
Or will Cotto take the best possible fight for boxing and boxing fans and unify with Golovkin in December?
I have a feeling HBO will throw him a large amount of money and we will see a unification bout. Cotto is a warrior, Golovkin wants to unify, I Think Cotto goes for it.
Anyone else?
I believe he will. I can't see him fighting Golovkin, who is a monster. He probably won't fight any other middleweight either. Canelo might pull out of the Lara fight if an offer is made by Cotto's people. TBDE might offer a rematch because he has to do something big to keep the Showtime contract from being a huge economic blunder.
if the title is held hostage and fought over by welterweights it will devalue it immensely.
It would be like if Roy Jones somehow beat a shot Lennox Lewis and then refused to defend the heavyweight title against anyone who weighed over 200 pounds because it's 'good business'
We all know GGG is the best middleweight in the world but lots of people really don't want him to unify the titles/get a shot at the lineal belt.
I don't even think it would have to go that bad for Golovkin for that to happen. He is being held to one of the highest standards in boxing currently, he isn't always going to live up to them.
Yup. Not fair at all. As his competition gets stiffer, his opponents will have more success and his KO ratio will go down. It happens with every fighter.
I'll tell you what's going to happen. Geale is a crafty veteran and a former world champion. This is not a pushover at all. He will absolutely have some success in this fight, will win some rounds and GGG may stop him late or win a decision.
And after the fight is over, they will claim that GGG was exposed, was a hypejob, has overrated power, etc. etc. because he didn't run through Geale in 4 rounds.

Well I don't think he is a MW, yes he beat the man but da man was a cripple. I don't expect him to fight someone like GGG to be honest because that would be unfair, they (Team Cotto) probably pick the Martinez fight because they know something we the fans don't know, their gamble has paid off but it would be silly to try someone like GGG. Cotto would probably fight Canelo or Mayweather at 160 and whoever wins would probably drop that belt like a hot potato.
I completely agree. Great post. Couldn't have said it better.
Like I said in that thread about Golovkin/Geale yesterday, the only fighter Golovkin would get credit for is Ward. Not even Froch would get him credit.
Strange, considering the people who say all these fighters are bums are mostly the same people saying Golovkin has never fought anyone and will get exposed. How exposed can he be if they themselves think Ward is the one that has to do it?

He's fought GGG in the amateurs already so he's witnessed the power first hand. He will absolutely have some success in this fight, will win some rounds and GGG may stop him late or win a decision.

I'm still not sold on the whole Cotto transformation with Roach. He beat a ballsy Sergio who had no legs, aka Foreman version 2.0
He's probably gonna unify vs soliman, he did beat Sturm...
I wouldn't be upset if he does fight Rubio =)
I'm more talking about the people on this site criticizing it and saying Geale is garbage and GGG should walk through him. If GGG walks through Geale it just means he's a damn good fighter and a force to be reckoned with. Geale is already a proven top dog in this division. He went on the road and beat Sturm in Germany.
Agreed. His focus should be cleaning out the division and that means beating Geale, Soliman, Quillin, Murray and if Cotto plans on staying...him too. That should keep him busy for 2-2 1/2 years.
I agree those are the only real established MW's he needs to beat but he's fighting Geale and Soliman already called him out its likely that happens this year. That only leaves Quillin who may lose if he fights anyone half decent anyway or he'll wait to be sacrificed to Canelo and unless Murray pulls a ATG duck job i don't see why that would take over 2 years.
Murray has a South African promoter now who puts on cards in Monaco so he'll fight there and a Golovkin showdown with the insane money they have in that place seems logical. HBO would probably air that too if he was the opponent it would be surprising if it didn't happen in 2015.
Golovkin is a hypejob and isn't that good, yet there isn't a person in the MW division he'd get credit for beating. People wouldn't even give him credit if he fought Martinez

Cotto will fight Floyd, even if he loses which he won't , the Canelo fight will still be available. I don't think he fights either of them in December, I think he'll fight someone else maybe Bradley like Arum said or Quillin then Mayweather in May, Canelo end of the year.
Cotto came in 155 on the scales... he knows his limits as does anyone who has half a brain.. GGG is far too much for Cotto to take on he is not going to hold it hostage just simply vacate...
Exactly. If I was Cotto's team I would avoid GGG. As a fan, I wouldn't even want to see that match up. It would be like the first cotto-margarito fight except no plaster in GGG wraps. Cotto would get off great work and move but as soon as GGG lands (a real middleweight), cotto will be on his knees or back.
Cotto has nothing to prove, fight canelo or even quillen and/or vacate. No need in getting massacred by a real middleweight for legacy. Get your paydays and get out without further damage. That one margarito fight was so brutal to watch. I can't imagine the damage that was done physically.
If Cotto fights Golovkin, I don't think any reasonable human being for the rest of boxing and human history can not give Cotto the respect he would deserve
oh, but there will be, trust me. some of these dudes just can't help themselves.
if miguel fights GloveKing, every single one of these butt plugs that bashes him should shut the **** up for the rest of time.

I think that has more to do with circumstances. If Pavlik, Taylor and Hops were in that division and GGG stood up to them, he'd be a pound for pounder...like they were.

Yep that would be the run he would need to go on with slight variation based on some guys rising and falling, although I think Canelo would be in there I would probably replace Cotto with him.

Hell of a standard he's held to for being just a hypejob lol
