I am talking about the Prime 175lb Roy Jones Jr. You know, the one that beat the Hall of Fame calibre and known steroid user, James Toney. That Roy Jones Jr was an extremely special fighter and is arguably one of the best of the last generation or two.
However, I think Andre Ward has a legitimate chance of beating a prime RJJ. Andre fights ugly, which sometimes borders on dirty but, you cannot deny his effectiveness. He trounced on world rated fights in the Super 6 (e.g. Froch, Kessler), winning all three fights with relative ease. I'm not sure that Roy Jones Jr beat anyone with the level of skill Andre Ward possess (when he's actually fighting).
If i had to pick a winner, I would begrudgingly say, Roy Jones Jr. I think he beats Ward on points in a very competitive fight.
Andre Ward looked pretty unbeatable when he cut through the Supper Middleweight division a couple of years ago. If Ward wouldn't stand much chance of beating Roy Jones, where does Roy Jones rank? Does he make it into the top 10 to 15 all time?
It's different eras, can't compare anyone in boxing today to roy.If you talking total package ,talent ,resume (fought in weak era of opposition and prolonging his career more than needed to), I would say top 30-50..talent wise and using the good ole "eye test" EASILY top 5 ..
If this took place after Jones vs Griffin 1, Ward would have a chance.
Heck no man, that's when Jones was pissed and brought RJ out. You don't want none of RJ

If Roy would have retired after Tarver I when he should have he would be in the duscussion for top ten ATG in my opinion. At his absolute best the guy was so elusive and could connect from anywhere with such speed and accuracy, he made other fighters look like they were shadow boxing in the mirror and that includes uber ATG Hopkins. I don't think I gave Bernard one round conclusively and only 2-3 while looking to give him them.
Prime Roy was just that damn good. Never seen another fighter like him before or since.
Roy Jones Jr might be the only super middle weight of the last 25 years that I would favour over Ward, more often than not.
Calzaghe-Ward would be a toss up IMHO
I am a big fan of Ward....East Bay in the house!!
Ward has exceptional ability and he is smart in dealing with speed. Chad Dawson was a great example of his patience in setting up a punch while walking a puncher down.
The problem Ward has it he had fought Jones starts with coming off his back foot to throw to the body. Roy is so fast....How does Ward get that punch there? If Ward tries to lead with his head he has to be able to corner Roy...ahd as much as "Boxing Goat is an azz of the highest order" I have to begrugenly agree that in this respect Ward would look a lot like Hopkins when he fought Roy.
What kills a fighter like Ward is that unless he has such exceptional footwork, Roy's speed and counter hook is too much.
Also, Ward does fight well inside...He may be able to hurt Roy inside, but to really threaten a guy like Roy at that range one has to be relentless inside. Guys like Roy can throw from any angle, so anytime you are walking them down....you suddenly can wind up following a puncher!
Roy wouldn't let ward control the fight.roy would pick ward apart with that quickness and run circles all over ward.i like ward , my top 3 current faves , but that prime roy would slip out of that inside gameplan ward would want to engage in and angles roy quickly throws would be a headache to handle .

Roy would've stopped him. If Ward fought in Jones era, he would just be another name.

Prime Jones doesn't lose, to anybody. He was THAT good.
The speed and overall athleticism was otherworldly, he had big power, cat like reflexes, could throw every punch in the book - he had it all.
