I think you're only focusing on the short-term, it was a nice gesture as an individual but there's no need for it and it will reduce his own effectiveness as a fighter. The ref is there to stop the fight if necessary, the fighter is there to fight. Don't try to do the refs job.
Remember Chris Eubank? After he seriously injured Michael Watson he wasn't the same fighter because he stopped using full power in his punches in case he might seriously injure an opponent again. The guy in this video already has that mentality early on so it could impact his entire career now and he might never fulfil his true potential. He needs to break out of that mentality and become more ruthless as a fighter if he wants to succeed in the fight game.
I understand what you're saying. But I will reserve judgment until he does that in a professional Prize fight. Can't really say what a person will and wont do for we all think different and responds to situations in all different ways. He said he didn't see the point in fighting him any more cause they wasn't getting paid. And they're both amateurs and would feel terrible. That's how he see's it. That's is his perspective in the situation. So in his mind, he was actually preventing a situation like a Chris Eubank. A situation that would probably stop HIM from using his full power. But who knows, everyone is different.
That wasn't sparring and that wasn't a prize fight. That was just one guy taking unnecessary punishment merely to entertain the crowd. And For a fighter to realize that right in the middle of the fight and do what he did. Well that is what true martial arts is all about.
This right here ^^^ But i'm not surprised most of these posters don't understand that.....

I don't see anything wrong with what he did. Neither of them are getting paid. HE already beat the hell out of the guy. Might as well end it they're just amateurs

Tonight's episode of INside MMA talks about this guy as well. They seemed to be okay with the idea of the forfeit. The other guy took the fight with 4 hours notice and was being completely beaten in every way possible. Pantangco fought again a week ago and choked a guy out in a triangle with little work. He's got talent and is a finisher. He has the "killer instinct" that people seem to think doesn't exist in him, but at the same time he has compassion.
The main loser in this matchup? The ref, for not stepping in and calling it sooner.
Credit to the fighter. I think if it was an opponent, who looked competent in the ring, he would have continued. He was dealing with a fighter that didn't look like he should be there, so there was nothing to prove and only the risk of getting permanently gun shy by causing long term damage.
I always think that the referee or corner should stop a fight, when it becomes clear that the two guys don't belong in the ring with one another.
they way i see it, it's like a sparring session.
both aren't getting paid, and u learn things.
if u ever spar a guy who u outmatch and go all in for the ko, then maybe you are doing it your way, but it aint my way. martial arts has a lot of respect in it.
i can tell you from my experience, go to a mma gym, u have guys who are more respectful than a boxing gym.thats a huge generalization. In amateur fights in boxing, the minute someone gets hurt, they do a 10 count, and they stop it a lot earlier as well. Plus they wear head gear. If anything MMA doesn't seem to care as much for its fighters compared to boxing when comes to amateur fighting.
If you're that superior to your opponent then you carry him until the fight finishes. A big punch or surprise submission is possible. I don't like what he did, stupid.
I saw that, nice gesture an all, but thats kind of the wrong sport for compassion. But it is better than the knocking someone out with one punch or kick then seeing them fall to the ground and still jump on them and hit them with 4-5 more punches in the face while they are already out cold. Thats what turns me off to the sport. Like this here..........

The dude is out before he hits the ground, yet he still gets hit with 4 hammer punches. A little sick.
I agree with this.
I think compassion is a strength and should be a part of every man, but this is both a combat sport, and a sport in itself, no matter how vicious a war I am in I can shake hands and say "good fight" after a sparring session or competitive match. If you don't have that character to be able to turn it on in the ring and turn it off when it's over and treat the sport with that reverence and maturity combat sports aren't for you, transfer your athleticism into a sport that won't put you in that predicament. You have to be able to separate senseless violence from violent aggression as a element of the combat sport.

Good post. I completely agree. Both Pacquiao and Mayweather have done this. I remember Mayweather did this to Cotto, in I think round 11, he hurt Cotto really bad with an uppercut I think and instead of jumping on Cotto he just backed off completely and let him recover. I can't remember which opponent it was for Pacquiao but it was a complete blowout and Pac kept looking back at the ref as if to tell him to stop the fight... I think it might have been Cotto too..
Lol, this post is funny as hell, Cotto is such a *****
Its a tough one this, to challenge ones moral decision in benefit to a completely out his depths opponent or go with the "this a combat sport, the loser quits" choice is hard.
I personally will say regardless of it being in the amateurs he should have rethink about his dedication to the sport, how many people would have done the same for him? a big fat zero unfortunately.
It's a nice gesture but this sport is brutal, and for that reason you either have it or you don't when it comes to being a top fighter, and finishing your foe is the 90% of the aim when you enter a ring.
You guys are ridiculous, they weren't pros, it's a sport. How do you know they want to do this for a living? They aren't getting paid and it wouldn't affect their future, if there was millions of dollars on the line he wouldn't have stopped, I'm sure. He's a good guy, sportsmanship is first.
Reminds of that old saying which goes something like "don't show your enemy foolish mercy". Combat sports are definitely a place where kindness is a weakness.

but when u're fighting in the lower ranks like this guy is u're suppose to put on a good show so u can move up to bigger and better revenue. i mean whats the point of fighting if he doesnt wanna hurt his opponent or finish the fight?
Steve Smoger woulda been like 'nope, keep fighting til he dies'
:lol1: so true. wasn't he the one who threw out the towel that the corner threw in ahahaa
