Im curious the the general consensus is on the division and how popular it is do you guys think its uneeded or not also do you think its better then light heavyweight right now as far as talent also compared to light heavy is there alot more exciting fighters?
Edit:sorry for typo in title :/
honestly the division seems to be the same it was few years ago for the most part all the tournament fighters are still around. I would like to see ggg move up and mix things up a bit. I also think ward and froch need to fight again i just feel sorry for ward they he is not able to show his skills like he wants
Ward can move up but he seems content to call out small guys and bring LHWs to him.
He is better then that.
I think ALL the "super" and "junior" weight classes are frauds by promoters and organizations/federations to add more BS Champions to build up match ups that are usually no better than an average 8 to 10 round fight.
The junior divisions were set up for young men growing into maturity as they developed. To have the extra so-called champions is a joke!
At 168lbs with 1 3/4 days to rehydrate they become light heavyweights!!! Its as simple as that, if you weight 168 you can easily weight 173 and be a lightheavy!!!
How about Ward at 175 were he belongs there's good opponents there for him.
If Dawson could go down why can't he move up. Moving up is a hell of a lot easier and healthier too!
I like this kid Ward but I think he's hiding at 168 looking for 154 and 160 guys to come to him, and for very little money too!
You see all these 135 and 140 guys moving right into 147 so why doesn't Ward move up? He could fight Hopkins, Stevenson, Kova and young Alverez.
All the "super" welters are middleweights who can't punch!!! Alverez looks like a good puncher because of his body type and ko ing nobody's but you saw against Mayweather that he's a very young and ordinary talent for now.
Get rid of the Junior and Super classes and you'll see competitive bouts more often and less rehydrating over 20lbs that isn't healthy or fair. Ray
Ray keeping it real as always.

Always liked the Super Middleweight Division. Big guys but still have decent speed. I think it's going through a transition now. Guys like Froch and Kessler are coming to the end, and others are trying to establish themselves. I'm sure it will heat up again in the next couple of years.
The depth of the SMW division is much greater than LHW I think.
Aside from the champs at LHW, it's pretty bleach to be honest. Just looking over the top 10, it's pretty abysmal.
LHW has 3 fighters: Hopkins, Stevenson, and Kovalev. If we're being generous, we'll add Pascal to that.
SMW is still better than that IMO. Ward, Froch, Groves, Abraham, Kessler, Chavez Jr., DeGale, etc.
Valid points. LHW is definetely top heavy.
Putting all the contractual nonsense to one side, Ward faces the same problem he faced after the Super Six. He was in a great position but who was he going to beat to take him to the next level? I think he's going to be waiting a long time for a star making opportunity to come along.
It's on the downswing as the stars are getting older. It's a testament to the awesomeness of the old guard that you still have Froch and Abraham as champions along with Ward.
I don't know if it's still better than LHW, but LHW is quite overrated at least for me. I don't think that much of Stevenson and Kovalev TBH and it's appauling that Hopkins is still a top fighter and Brähmer is also holding a championship at the weight.

Andre Ward is the best in the super middleweight division and it is not even close. If he went to light heavyweight he would still be the best at 175 and it wouldn't even be close.
You can't make that assumption, how would he fare against power from Stevenson and Kovalev? Let's not turn Andre into another "Fantasy King" of all divisions, he needs to prove himself, his last couple years in boxing have been fairly pathetic.

Can't believe no one has had a go at the thread starter for calling it the 'supper middleweight division'.
There is a James Toney joke to be made there somewhere.
The Supper Middleweight division is where Toney and Butterbean reign. Odlanier Solis is a rising star, though.

Hey did James Toney just eat the whole division?
I'll make my way out

It was, for the most part over the last decade, better than LHW but with Stevenson shaking things up at 175 and Kovalev cleaning out the left overs and not to mention Hopkins breaking records, LHW is once again important.
That's not to say SMW is no longer a good division, it most definitely is, Groves is something to get excited about and Froch is almost always in great, FOTY type fights, ALWAYS!
Ward is one of the best technician in the sport but sadly he doesn't fight much but Jr has shown he can do well at the weight and he is another fun guy to watch, with the possible addition of GGG, the division can only get better. Not to mention DeGale might still have a part to play at the top.
Froch vs any of the top contenders is an intriguing fight. Groves, Chavez Jr, Bika, DeGale, Kessler.
Ward is hard work.
I don't think I'll ever watch him fight live again unless he is fighting in Europe. Just not the sort of fighter you will stay up until 4 in the morning to see. The division would actually be better if he just left. He is that good but that boring that he just undermines the whole fucking division.
Went from one of the most interesting to one of the most irrelevant. There's Ward, who knows when he'll fight. Froch is kinda on the downside. Kessler out. Chavez jr. Bika. Groves. Eh.
Kind of unavoidable after the Super Six.
