So says Tim Smith in Ring/GBP magazine.
Espinoza does not have any projections on what the Mayweather-Maidana fight will generate on pay per view. But Mayweather needs to get at least 1.5 million to justify the $32 million guarantee that Showtime is giving him as a minimum for each of those six fights in the contract.
This would mean the Canelo sales just cover up the shortfall from the Guerrero fight.
Smith also writes the following:
Mayweather will probably have to go up in weight to have another tantalizing match on the order of De La Hoya and Alvarez. That would mean taking on middleweights champions like Gennady Golovkin or Sergio Martinez, who is fighting Miguel Cotto on June 14.
Ellerbe said that is something that they are not considering, though Espinoza said it had been discussed as a possibility with some of the smallish middleweights.

Dang! Showtime is burning a big hole in there pockets. Floyd is over paid.
1.5m to break even. This fight will just reach 1m at the most. This might be a flop.
I don't know why people keep believing this Mayweather needs to sell 1.5 million in order for Showtime to break even crap.
Showtime has consistently said it isn't losing money. And even if they somehow were losing money they have CBS their parent company backing them up.
CBS wants Showtime to become a bigger player in boxing and compete with HBO, so they're willing to throw money to get the really big players and really big fights.
I could tell that this fight flopped. I can't normally see threads at NSB unless I log in. After the fight, it felt normal here at NSB. No huge traffic.
yup, i remember after manny fought bradley, i had trouble reading this forum for almost 24 hours.
this fight is so far looking to be a catastrophe for showtime. their main star got exposed badly and its unlikely to reach the 1.5 million needed to break even. i'll be fair and say 1.5 million is a bit tough, but i would consider anything lower than 1.2 million a flop when you take into account the stacked undercard, mexican holiday etc...

HBO wants GGG/Martinez afterwards
Well I'm just reading the number this guy got from his article from the Ring
Martinez is not going anywhere near golovkin. Floyd will fight the winner of cotto-martinez, just so long as martinez doesn't win. If martinez wins, floyd rematches maidana. Floyd also won't get near golovkin, even at 154, which golvkin said he would make to fight floyd. Floyd would love to get a real belt at middleweight. The problem is that he matches up poorly with all the current beltholders and he knows it. A cotto upset (i can't see him winning) over martinez would be a huge boon for mayweather: he would get a very lucrative rematch with cotto (who he knows he can beat), plus he can pick up the lineal middleweight belt. No way he would turn that down that opportunity just to rematch maidana.
If Mayweather/Guerrero did 870K and Mayweather/Canelo did 2.4M, that's 3,270,000 right there. If they need to average 1.5M PPV buys then they're shooting for 1,230,000 PPVs this time around.
That's a good point. And them getting around 1.2 million buys is not that unreasonable.
Tim Smith is full of sh.t just like everyone else who makes ignorant comments like this. I have said it a dozen times, but need to say it again. Showtime is not paying Mayweather's guaranteed purse. Golden Boy promotions is paying his guarantee. That is why Mayweather receives a check for the guaranteed amount from GBP after each fight. GBP ill make more than enough to pay it based on PPV revenue, ticket sales, sponsorships and international broadcasting rights. Mayweather's contract with Showtime is separate and no one except Mayweather has any idea how much they are paying him per fight. However, I would bet everything that I own that it is not $32 million per fight.
I remember you used to be Tim Smiths biggest fan.
Especially when he said this,
"According to a source familiar with the talks, Pacquiao's representatives asked what penalties Pacquiao would face if he tested dirty and also if a dirty test result could be kept secret so that the integrity of the fight wouldn't be ruined in the public eye." - Tim Smith, 12/25/09
Or is it that because he paints Floyd in a negative light that hes fos?
How can the Maidana fight not sell over 1mil ppv. After all, Floyd is himself the attraction.
He really isn't though. Even though he thinks he is, he needs an opponent that will help him bring the numbers. Maidana is not that. Let's be realistic.
Only ones left are Pac, Chavez Jr, Khan if the fight is in the UK and....
Hopkins in that freak show kinda way.
:bottle::bottle:
:lol1: of course. Tyshaun giving his valuable insight on the subject.
"I don't like floyd doe" fights hard for floyd in every single thread. :lol1:

If Golovkin fights and beats Chavez Jr at 168, he will have the winner of Froch-Groves, Ward, Kessler, Abraham, Bika, etc calling him out and then he will feel how it is to be wanted because you finally got a good name on your resume and you are a bigger name yourself.
I have no prob with Martinez vs GGG, but I rather see Mayweather fight Martinez and Golovkin fight Froch, Groves or Ward(After Chavez Jr). But I know Martinez has already said that he'll be ready for GGG after beating Cotto. That's probably going to be DiBella and Martinez's priority, then probably lose via stool retirement from his knee giving out/too much of a beating from the younger, powerful, healthier, prime Golovkin. At least Floyd would be like 38, past prime, and small.

It takes two to tango. I don't know if the article is true or not, however I don't see it making 1.5 million even with the good undercard with named fighters.
I'd say it's possible 1.3
HBO made the right choice. HBO is in the business of making money not losing
The company that was just giving Andre freaking Berto million dollar plus paydays not too long ago is not in the business of losing money. News to me.
I'm just tryna figure out how showtime potentially not making huge profits from Mayweather fights is Floyd's problem? You think he should go up to showtime and offer to take a pay cut or something?
I actually agree with this. Showtime was stupid to sign Floyd to such a long term, high-paying contract with no guarantees that Floyd would fight guys that would cover their nut. Especially given Floyd's History of 'vacations' and excuses. But they were desperate to ply him away from HBO so they gave Haymon carte blanche.
And a fight with Amir Khan isn't going to help matters either.
