Before anointing Porter, Thurman and Golovkin as the best, lets see how they do when they step up.
Golovkin has a lot to prove vs Chavez Jr. before he deserves Martinez.
Heck throw Porter and Thurman the ring with each other.
Thurman vs. Porter on Floyd's next PPV with the winner fighting Floyd next May. Khan needs to look real good and put his religious shidt on hold and be ready for Floyd this September or Floyd needs to move the fight to October or find someone else...but who ? Ideally, I'd like to see Floyd fight both Thurman and Porter while they still have their O but neither is quite box office ready.
Floyd versus Khan
Thurman versus Porter
Matthysee versus Garcia 2 or Matthysee versus Broner
That would be a great pay per view that would do well internationally.
im worried it'd turn out to be alexander - bradley again
I don't think that's a reason to not make it. Alexander/Bradley was a good match up before the fight happened. It just so happened that Alexander's lack of inside game was exposed by Timmy.
But remember Alexander struggled like hell with Kotelnik 1 fight before and HBO and a lot of fans tried to throw that under the rug.
Alexander fights with a rhythm and if you throw him off, he can't adjust. He's a product of the amateur system and never adjusted.
Kind of sad that Berto was the 3rd best welterweight at one point but was fighting dead-even with Zaveck before the awful TKO ruling. The division has improved a lot since then.
Yeah it has to be fair.
3 years ago. Senchenko was a Top 5 WW. Hard to believe really.
Zaveck, Chaves and Soto Karrass are all decent wins to me. Especially considering how he beat them all. I'm not saying crown Porter and Thurman as the kings of the welterweight division right now.
But both of them are legitimate top 8 contenders right now who have already stepped up and proven themselves.
The next step is to see whether they can become stars in the sport or will they just be top contenders who will win alphabet titles here and there for the rest of their careers.
Yeah I agree he's Top 10. I just couldn't remember who he'd beaten in the Top 10 but I think you're right Zaveck was still top 10 after his loss but good performance against Berto.
Karass pretty good too, coming off two good wins.
Chavez I can't really rate because Chavez hasn't fought anyone of note other than Thurman.
But yeah I agree Thurman's a solid contender at WW for sure.
I don't think Thurman has proved himself all that much though. Atleast not like Porter. He's done what he's had to do with the opposition he's faced which is always a good sign.
It's always a warning sign for me when people struggle at that level I.e Berto, Broner etc.
Thurman's performed thus far.
Yeah I suppose that was a decent win.

There are 3 elite fighters at 147 right now. Proven doesn't mean "I think he can beat Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao". Proven is beating contenders and working your way into the top 10.
I'm speaking from a technical stand point, neither of them are proven for me.
This is the thing, pertaining to Porter-Thurman, the parts of their game that are unanswered are vital in how they would fare against the elite, extremely vital and only the two of them facing one another can answer those questions. Till then both of them are unproven as far as I'm concerned.
By the way I gave Porter a very good chance at beating Alexander.

There are fighters in their mid 30's on the pound for pound list that haven't faced every style at the elite level.

No, definitely not. Like I said Porter hasn't had to second guess himself in his last two outings because neither Alexander or Malignaggi can fight on the inside, punch or counter well enough to gain his respect. Thurman at the very least has shown that he can do two of those things, and while Thurman has shown a pretty good mid to long range game, he hasn't faced anyone with Porter's foot speed who will get inside and have the physical strength to maybe keep him there. How is any of this hard to understand for some of you?
How has Thurman shown he can do that?
Who's Thurman proved himself against?
They are both proven and legitimate top 10 contenders. You don't need to be on the pound for pound list or beat a fighter on the pound for pound list to be considered proven.
You prove yourself by beating other ranked contenders and both Thurman and Porter have done that.
Who's Thurman beat in the Top 10?
That's a genuine question.

Funny part is Porter and Thurman both would probably beat every opponent Floyd has fought in the last 5 years minus maybe Canelo but both Porter and Thurman are big WW so they maybe could handle him as well.

GTFOH!!!! Nobody was picking Porter to beat Alexander. Boxing fans STAY trying to revise history. He was a replacement opponent and was supposed to be a tuneup for Devon. In fact, the fight was originally supposed to be in St. Louis as a showcase fight just in case Alexander vs. Mayweather was going to happen.
People wrote Porter off completely after the draw with Diaz.
Buddy, I'm talking about power wise..he fought 2 feather fisted opponents in no row. His reckless bull rush style will get him laid out against Thurman.
Porter fought 2 guys he could walk right through. When he fights One time, he's not gonna get away with lunging in with wild left hooks. He'll get hit all night and maybe stopped. I like both guys but neither has beaten a guy on each other's level.
