To his credit Patterson did fight Liston. --- Just went to boxrec and there was no duck. He fights a trilogy with Ingemar Johansonn (the number 1 contender), then takes a tune-up fight and then takes Liston, the new number 1 contender. --- Still I remember hearing/reading that Cus delayed fighting Liston. He may have done so but that delay would be only have been a few months, and in this day, where belt holders never fight each other in order to unify the division I can't hold that against Cus or Floyd.
