Before Mayweather turned down a fight with him to fight the real champion in Baldomir and former undisputed champion in Judah, Margarito was the WBO welterweight titleholder and on a roll. Wins over Kermit Cintron, Antonio Diaz, and Six heads Lewis were his biggest wins and he was very big for a welterweight.
By piggy-backing and using his former clients name, he made Margarito "the most feared welterweight in the world."
I never saw what it was that was supposed to make him so formidible for Mayweather to supposedly duck him. He was the first of many fighters who would become similar to a "white hope" on who would beat Mayweather.OKay he had a great chin and stamina, after that he has low marks in just about everything else. slow of hand and foot...combos were slow, footwork crappy, he didnt cut off the ring he just followed fighters around. His power is up for debate considering we dont even know the fights he used illegal gloves in.
Now its the end of his career...He was obliterated by a 37 year old Mosley, dominated again by Cotto but this time lost on a stoppage, and got the stuffing beat out of him againt Pacquaio, Lost to the wholly average Daniel Santos, former WBO 154 beltholder.
He was never anything special to begin with and im glad that era of time is over. A win over this guy between 05-present would have done nothing to enhance Mayweather's resume
First of all, no, he wasn't the biggest hypejob in the last 15 years. For one, Margarito may have been labelled by some as the "most feared" guy in his division during his short reign, but if you look at the amount of attention he was getting from networks it amounted to f*ck all.
Look at guys like Jermain Taylor or Andre Berto who were being touted as the next superstars of boxing and being shoved down our throats on a routine basis by big networks (namely HBO) before they'd ever really done sh*t.
More recently, look at a guy like Adrien Broner and how Showtime tried their best to make him Floyd's heir-apparent before he'd even beaten anybody above the C level.
Now compare all that network coverage and fight publicity to Margarito's.
So no, Margarito wasn't even close to the biggest hype of the last 15 years.
Secondly, this whole "most feared" mantle is nothing more than a publicity gimmick, nothing more, nothing less. Arum didn't make people start calling Margarito that - Fans did that on their own because boxing fans are simple minded f*ckwits who aren't entirely dissimilar to WWE fans - They like gimmicks.
When Margarito was beaten by Williams it wasn't too long before fans on here started calling Williams the "most feared" man in the sport. Hell, even HBO started repeating that line and Kellerman made the retarded statement on-air that Williams had "no less than three divisions paralyzed with fear."
Then Williams lost.
Then it was Valero who was most feared until he went all Chris Benoit on us.
Then it was Matthysse.
Like I said, it's just a gimmick. Made up to get stupid fans like most of NSB's userbase talking. Why? Because word of mouth is the cheapest form of publicity available.
You missed the biggest hype job of the last 15 years and probably all time in Jeff Lacy.
But yeah Margarito's not a hype job. He was relatively unknown until he beat Cotto (Speaks for itself) and he had some good wins aswell before that.

Margo stole pac's prime, that is the fact that too many people missed!
Maybe people judged him as a cheat or as the brick holder but what I think is Margo is the toughest mother****er alive.
Pac was interviewed by a local after the fight and said that he can't believe that a margo was like a terminator that keeps standing through punishment.
Only margo had pac vomit blood after the fight, he's urine was blood and he took a hospital routine rest after the fight.
Simply that fight was a disaster for him just to please the fans of a david and goliath story.
Haters gonna hate but for me The Tijuana Tornado is a no Joke!!!
P.S.
Floyd retired just to duck him!
But just to make one thing clear, ream Pacman also ducked the pre Mosley version of Margarito.
Freddy Roach, "we're brave, but we're not that brave". A hype job doesn't make pfp fighters run from their own interview or have Roach admitting they're not that brave.
To be fair I don't think Manny was near that weight class while tony was in his "prime"
Floyd has been there since like late 2006.

When Floyd ducked Margarito (it was slightly before he signed to fight either Baldomir or Judah) Margarito was absolutely not a hypejob. Floyd was terrified of that man. Got ran from his own interview by that man.
People always ask "what did Margarito bring to the table"? He brought unrelenting pressure and 15 round stamina and no care whatsoever of being hit. In short, picture Castillo or Hatton to a far lesser extent, only much bigger and stronger. Yeah not such a walk in the park anymore, now was it??
you could buy "RIPPED FUEL" over the counter....who would have expected an over the counter supplement to have illegal substances in it?
You can to this day buy plaster of paris over the counter, cheating is cheating
If it weren't for the controvesy raising doubts about his career prior to the Mosley fight, I would have said he had a very good resume.
He beat Sergio Martinez, Joshua Clottey, Miguel Cotto.
I thought he beat Santos.
The Paul Williams fight was a good one...he lost, at best I think you could make an argument for a draw.
But yeah, that Mosley fight casts doubts upon him.

Androstenedione is a steroid.
I can argue all day, why Roy is one of the best and succeed with most supporting the statement. Roy used a drug to help cut weight (not okay) but that is much different than wearing loaded gloves.
You can argue this point of Mayweather being scared of a man that today ever one would say "easy win"/"cherry pick" because he would have been just that... an easy win. Cry all you want about a fighter you dislike but all you do is make yourself look foolish and a bit ignorant!
Always the same cop out. Doesn't change the fact that he cheated. :lol1:
Cheating aside though, damn watching Jones in his prime against someone with a pulse like Toney/Hopkins was just amazing.
Mayweather was punked out and he ducked Margarito and other WWs.

Hype-job is used way to loosely nowadays. Margarito earned his status. Not sure if it's been mentioned for some reason, but he is the only man to stop Sergio Martinez. Dude had a damn good career.
belts collect dust
so why does it matter that he fought for the championship again?
oh yea, because baldomir had the belt.

I think Mayweather said this years after a proposed fight with Margarito or Baldomir
Let me ask you this and answer honestly....Would you rather fight an unknown fighter with a trinket (wbo) for 8 mill or would you rather face the man who beat the undisputed champion to be the man, for money in the same neighborhood and same risk and more reward?
I'd have fought Baldmir too... champ(baldomir)> contender(margarito)
