I never really followed the guy till he fought Jeff Lacy. I followed Jeff Lacy since his fight with Syd Vanderpool. Seems like I started hearing about Calzaghe around the time of the Lacy fight. Anyway I watched his fights with Bika, Manfredo, Kessler, Hopkins, and Jones. I know he fought Hopkins and Jones way later than he should have, but would Calzaghe have a chance against the guys in the division today?
In this quad with all fighters in their prime:
Jones beats Cal: timing and power and speed too much for Cal
Cal beats Toney: Toney has a great style but the volume punching of Cal would have edged it for him.
Jones beats any version of Toney.
All 3 beat perhaps the next best fighter who I put somewhere in the #4 spot, Chris Eubank. He and Toney possibly a draw if they fought.
Pretty damn good, and pretty damn tough..I always thought he never got enough credit for his toughness..His footwork was really good as well, and his work-rate was 2end to none..Joey Zags was the truth, people like to take shots at him..I never had an issue with him..Very good fighter..
I asked this before and was told he was a fraud with only a few remarkable wins in his career. Everything else was him fighting shot fighters and cherry-picking. Remember these are not my words. This is a summary from when I asked this same question.
He'd make Andre Ward look silly, that's all you need to know. They don't call him the best super middleweight to ever lace up a pair of gloves for nothing.
He would have a very, very, very tough time with Ward.

your disrespect to sven ottke is unbelievable

Do you think so? 50/50 fight imo.
And also watch the Robin Reid fight, that's a good one.
I'll check those two out. I don't remember ever seeing him really sit down on his punches. Hand speed was crazy. Looked impossible to time.
Calzaghe would have easily beaten Froch. The test would be Andre Ward.
5hit yeah, I forgot about Ward ahaha, probably cause he's been so inactive. But yeah that would be a steep hill to climb.
It is, but I believe it, he was skilled and had hand speed. Froch would have been a great fight but Joe would have out witted him, and I'm English.
Any recomendations on any of his fights to watch prior to Lacy?
That's saying a lot. A fight with Froch would have to be at the top of my list. I would give the edge to Calzaghe because of the hand speed.

I believe Calzaghe would have beat everyone in the SMW and LHW division today!
