I bring this up because it's my stance that his drawing power consists of him having an undefeated record. It's his air of invincibility that has the fans intrigued and as a result they tune in by the masses whenever he's facing an opponent who seems to have a shot at dethroning him. Now whenever I bring this up his fan boys reply with something along the lines of "they tune in because he's the best fighter in the world" which he very well may be. I just don't think it's his fighting style or entertainment value that their tuning in for.
So my question is..... If Floyd had say.... 3,4,or 5 losses on his record would he even be a ppv fighter?
I would say yes. Pac has like five losses and Hoya had like 6 losses. Let's just say he fights Lara in sept and loses by decision. I still think he would sell a lot of PPV's or maybe fight somebody at MW like Martinez and lose. He would still get PPV buys because he challenge himself against those fighters. If he went the Roy Jones rout then no. What I mean by that is Roy Jones is still fighting and he is way past his prime where not even HBO is buying his fights anymore but they let him be a commentator for their network.
When your entire career revolves around that "0" you cherrypick opponents and fight in a certain style to make sure that the "0" is never in any real danger no matter how much you get criticized for it.
You also don't get much of a legacy if you never fight anyone capable of taking that "0"
You lose the "0" you lose money.
How many loses does Manny have? He still a PPV star or nah?
Only on NSB with these dumb ass threads
Yes but Manny is an action fighter who keeps fans at the edge of their seats for the most part. His drawing power is his fighting style. Fans tune in to see an actual "fight". Floyd doesn't draw because he's an action packed entertaining fighter. He draws because he's undefeated, controversial and plays the heel well. Sure u have the diehards who tune in to see his Boxing mastery on display but for the most part the majority of those tuning in are doing so to see if he loses due to his aura of invincibility. It's sort of like when Tyson fought. People were glued to the TV and ordered his ppvs just to see how fast he can demolish his opponent. They didn't care to see Tyson fight the distance. They wanted to witness pure savagery in the ring.
When his entire career revolves around being undefeated it's in Floyd's best interest to take less challenging, yet still marketable fights. His promoter knows this, his agent knows this, his team knows this.
You can see evidence of this in his last 3 opponents.
I kinda agree with this. Not sure how you market yourself to the public having a loss on your record.
he'd still make good money being the B-side of a De La Hoya fight.
No...
Action fighters like manny, cotto mayorga, morales, gatti, continue to be big draws because of all their action fights... If Floyd went 2-3 in five fights his stock and popularity would sink like a rock...
This depends when he lost. If he took 1 or 2 losses early in his career then I can easily see him a PPV star this day and age. But he cannot take losses this late in his career and maintain a massive PPV status.
That would depend on when the losses happened. If they were at the beginning of his career i don't think it would make much difference.
Even if it happened early in his career he wouldnt have his aura of invincibility now that is credited with his drawing power. If he had lets say 3 his losses early in his career I dont even think he would have ever had the opportunity to be a ppv fighter.
No. He's convinced the general public that being undefeated means something. His marketability is directly tied to his record. He knows this. That's why he's not willing to face a fighter who might beat him.
No.
Defensive fighters are generally hard to sell. They sell when they are pitted against aggressive, rampaging KO artists. Fans, of course, root for the aggressor and want to see the guy who refuses to engage in the ring gone for good.

No because his fights are not exciting.

At this point in his career, yes... He can have 5-6 losses and still have a fan base like Manny... The 0 is the cherry on top, it is what made him the highest paid athlete... But without it, he's still a superstar...
No obviously not.
His marketability is based entirely around the fact that he's undefeated and has an aura of invincibility.
Once he loses it's gone.
A large portion of people tuning in are tuning in to see if/hope he loses or finally get's humbled.
