Cant protect everyone. Paulie/porter and maidana/floyd have been made but now it seems GBP has cherry pickers and their protecting fighters.
This is what happens when you give Floyd Mayweather a $32 million guarantee for every fight. The only fight they made any money on with this deal was the Canelo fight. They lost millions on the Guererro fight and will lose millions on the Maidana fight. When Floyd fights guys of Guererro's and Maidana's stature Showtime needs 1.2 million buys just to break even. They aren't going break even here, they wouldn't break even on a Khan fight either, or Garcia. They got nobody over at GBP that can get them to 1.2 million buys right now in a fight with Mayweather. If they do the Pac fight, yes they will. Martinez would get him there as well I believe but there isn't much else.
The so-called stacked stable is in name only. In reality, fights with named fighters are extremely difficult to make. They all want to get paid huge amounts of money. Why else would Porter and Guerrero opt out of the Thurman fight?
Even HBO, with deeper pockets, can't make all these fights. High risk fights require millions of dollars to happen.
That's the problem right there. GBP bet on the wrong horse with Showtime.
HBO is and has always been #1 in big time boxing events.
The bosses at CBS/SHO and shareholders are pissed at how much money they lost in 2013 and they didn't get the number of additional subscribers they thought they were gonna get
GBP is a sinking ship and if I was a fighter over there, I would buyout my contract and jump over to Top Rank/HBO where to quote Tim Bradley "They pay better."
This is that big flaw I have kept on repeating about Golden Boy's supposed stacked stable. The most interesting fights aren't necessarily going to be made just because they have the same promoter. A fighter's manager will continue to make matchups based on the same risk/reward equation they've always used.
