Don't get me wrong, I love the guy and I think he is an outstanding commentator. He has very high boxing IQ and is one of my favorites when it comes to analyzing fights.
But on more than one occasion the guy has flat out said the judges scoring a fight were bought at worst and extremely bias at best. Tonight he went even further when he said that the shobox stats that show the number of punches thrown and landed are based on "the opinion of the guy pushing the buttons," in a way suggesting that those numbers can also be skewed at will if desired.
I'm not doubting that some fights are fixed, I'm just shocked that a guy working for a major boxing network can constantly call it out and continue to be employed hah. More power to him though.
Thats his side job. Hes a Golden Boy fighter still being given big fights. Hes not going to HBO.
Right. He's not going to hbo . But if they fired him as commentator .. His Golden Boy contrat will eventually expire. He's not going to be fighting too much longer but can commentate for many , many years and it doesnt have to be with Showtime.
paulie is the most honest commentator in the sport right now. showtime made a great move hiring him. hopefully he's here to stay. the world of boxing needs more paulie malignaggis.
Well because he is splitting out the truth. He hasn't said anything wrong IMO. He calls it like he sees it and I wish there are most commentators like him.
He was doing something the other guys don't do...being honest and saying what he actually thinks. If you ask me what boxing needs is more Paulie's

Even before the first open scores were read Pauli was commenting on how it doesn't matter how good Herrera was doing it was more if they were going to allow anything other than a Garcia win in PR that night. It was pretty funny hearing the other two guys trying to just gloss over what he just said.
Pauli knew what was about to happen, it happened to him against Juan Diaz in Texas and again when he fought an undefeated connected guy in Broner (I though Pauli won that fight but it was close)
It's very ironic you say this. After the first lethargic punch Angulo threw vs Canelo we all knew what was going happen.

Paulie does a great job and showtime knows this . If they fire him he could wind up across the street at hbo . Something they don't want .

The thing is, if the judges scored it bad during the first 8 then that will also affect how each fighter fights for the remaining 4. So in open scoring, sometimes what you see in the last 4 is different than what you would get if neither fighter knew the score.
Also, what Paulie was trying to say is that it was turning out to be a home town scorecard decision. So the last 4 rounds were all academic.
Very good point. I think at that point he knew that Garcia was going to get the gift decision regardless of what happened for the remainder of the fight.
listen i know some don't like him but paulie takes after teddy atlas in that respect. i mean to me its obvious too.
Teddy and Paulie calling fights together would be amazing
But they would probably get kicked off the network instantly
Paulie is just a straight up unbiased commentator. Even if you whooped his arse in a fight and we're fighting where he commentated he would give you respect where it's due because he is simple a man of discipline and morals. Fcuk the judges and more importantly fcuk the people that make the hidden decisions in these fights
True. It also seemed like after 8, Paulie was going to score it for Herrera regardless of what happened over the last 4 rounds though, just so he could b*tch about how the judges got it wrong.

He is a good commentator and he is honest whether it supports the organization or not. There are very few if any commentators anywhere like him and that alone makes him valuable, they won't cut him because of that alone, not to mention his personality is very animated and authentic.
True ... and he has ring smarts as well. He analyzes the fighters quite well and gives a good picture of what's going on.

Yes he usually does but you can tell he was under pressure to not call this fight a robbery. Instead he kept saying "the judges missed a great fight"
