same day weigh ins should be re instituted again.
That way fight nights are against two fighters from the same division.
not featherweights fighting welterweights and welterweights fighting middleweights.
If you cant make weight move the F up and stop draining yourself so you can make a weight your body is not letting you weigh in so you can take advantage of smaller fighters after the rehydration period.
fvcking scumbags.
I like how the IBF does it. Two weigh in's, one the day before and one the day. The day of the fight a fighter cannot rehydrate more than 10 pounds. I like this. I don't know all the specifics (is it only title fights?) but this seams to be the best of both worlds.
Its at like 9am the morning of the fight. While its a better rule than any other organization, fighters still have 12+ hours to rehydrate more weight so it will only really affect extreme cases
The point is that if you drain yourself and you get injured or hurt because of it then there's no one to blame but you. Whereas if you are in the correct weight class, and your opponent puts on 2/3 divisions weight, then your health/life is in danger because of what your opponent has done.
If that makes any sense... it does in my head
I completely understand what you are saying, that it is the athlete's responsibility to function at his bets possible weight but often times it is not just the boxer's decision. In many cases, everyone from the trainer to the manager to the promoter have a say in who should fight where and how often. Even if it was down to the boxer, sometimes, he or she may feel more comfortable at 150 lb...which is between both welter and light middle, for that particular person, it is far easier to lose weight, than to gain it. Having done that, he leaves himself drained and in danger of serious physical damage, simply because he is/was trying to earn a living where he originally felt more comfortable.
In response to the poster speaking about amateur weigh ins, fair enough but the amateur side of things just isn't as taxing, the boxers have head gear and larger gloves and only box for 3 rounds or so. This decreases the chances of long term damage, having said that, I believe amateur boxers should have the same weigh in regulations as the pros.
Weigh-ins should be in the ring before the fight. If a fighter dehydrates to make a weight he shouldn't be fighting at, he should be forced to fight with that handicap.
Same day weigh ins are not going to happen but every fighter should be subjected to a next day weigh in limit.
The problem would arise what if they were over what happens then and would a promoter dare cancel a major fight the day of.
The other fighter has to sacrifice 80% of his purse or something.

Someone wrote something about steroids that i think went; "If everybody is using them why is it cheating"..I think it applies here, because now all fighter rehydrate 10 to 20 pounds,so if im not mistaken the weight is always 2 to 4 pounds, not 13..If anybody have seen that discrepancy let me know..Now some fighters dont do the voluntary same day weigh in because we know and they know the have a problem with weight and yes,im talking about floyd and chavez...
I think the solution would be for people to fight at their weight give or take 5 pounds, but see, humans will always try to have an advantage over the other,so no change will make a fair fight.
Floyd never has a problem making weight, his missed it once cause he knew he could just pay JJM off. He walks around at 150. He is one of the only fights that i can recall atm that does that re hydrate well above his class. The other being manny and JJM. I guess its cause these guys have come from a smaller class.
When canleo ends his career at say 168 he wont be putting on such a big weight differences, same with JJC. but if it was say day weigh in they would have to fight in these weight classes now which would be good.
True

It wouldn't cure the problem, but it would make it a lot more difficult to have an advantage through weight.
true it would help curb it.
I wonder if, instead of calling off promotions (terrible for boxing) or fining fighters (which some can afford and others can't) they should strip fighters of their boxing licence for a certain amount of time if they miss weight? Make them spend a year on the sidelines...
edit: But we need a global singular governing body to make that effective. Oh if only we had one of those!
I completely disagree with same day weigh ins, I was reporting and watching this sport when same day weigh-ins were the norm and fighters were terribly drained. It lead to far too many injuries, more than I care to mention here.
Yes there is a probably with "superstar" fighters not coming in at the contracted weight but that means promoters, opponents and commissions need to be stronger. Ultimately, it all comes down to monetary gains and far too many fighters are happy to feed off of the rich, even if that star is willing to pay you hundreds of thousands. Make him weigh in, lose that weight, what ever but do not bring back same day weigh ins. That is an atrocious idea.

Olympic and AIBA amateur boxers do it all the time, as well as many different sport athletes. Fighters like Salido or Chavez are coming in 4 division higher during fight night than their opponent, thats ridiculous
They should make same day weigh ins and doctors should check the athletes and if they think they are drained or in bad condition, they shouldnt clear them to fight. Its just as dangerous to have a guy outweighing you by 20 pounds. Of course everything is centered around money instead of making this a fair fight. I dont even understand weigh ins when you are actually 20 pounds heavier when you actually fight, whats the point

It's crazy to think how big weigh-ins have gotten. When Floyd and Canelo fought the MGM was packed, and for what; to see two dudes in their underwear pose and stare at each other. Crazy
They are used as a means of promoting the fight. This is the world we live in now. I'm not really too bothered by it. I do think same day weigh ins are the way to go tho.

I dont think this would cure the problem of richer fighters paying off their opponents so they dont have to make weight though.
Best way to tackle that is to make the rules stricter on anyone who is over the contracted (fao Floyd fans) weight. For some of these guys a few hundred thousand dollars just isnt cutting it
