The more I think about this, the more it makes sense to me..... Both fighters are justifiably considered master boxers with genuinely decent power..... The whole boxing world would buzz about this one.... You might think I'm crazy, but it could be a master stroke for Floyd....
I'm not suggesting a win for Floyd or Sergio here, just the possibility that would be a defining moment in either of their careers......
Sergio Martinez is getting old and is dealing with injury issues..... He's not a knockout artist, but he does have pop..... He's a huge name with great credentials..... No one would consider Martinez a cherry pick for Floyd.....
Floyd would have to fight at the highest weight he's ever fought at before...... But he did win at 154 so success at 160 should not be considered unrealistic..... I'd say a catch weight would work better for Floyd..... But at 160 he could take another belt in another weight division..... He would see this belt and Martinez as legacy material......
Risk vs Reward......
Sergio would be fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr, enough said.... Everyone is gunning for a Floyd fight.... Sergio would be getting a aging Mayweather at his highest weight ever and his power might not carry up that well.... His speed might also be compromised at that weight.... This is a fight Sergio might realistically win.....
A calculating Floyd Mayweather Jr might realize a true opportunity..... Sergio still considered the top dog at middleweight..... (Sorry GGG fans, GGG might actually be better but Sergio still wears the crown, until someone takes it from him......)
Floyd might be getting a diminishing Sergio..... Sergio is well past his prime and only has a few good fights left in him..... Sergio might be injured to the point where he'll never be the same again..... If Floyd can conclude that Sergio is ready to become human and someone out there is going to benefit from this, why not Floyd????? Sergio might be vulnerable right now..... A big win for Sergio over Miguel Cotto could mask this possibility......
Getting Sergio before GGG does would be genius...... Floyd would further Cement his legacy at middleweight also and avoid GGG...... After which Floyd could move back down and stay there.... Floyd is aging himself, a victory over a high profile Sergio Martinez might be the best opportunity Floyd will get vs a fighter everyone respects and is considered risky business for Floyd.....
Can you see the opportunity that I see???? It's all pure speculation on my part..... But this is boxing and boxing fans dream a lot..... So give me a pass and consider the possibility....
Erm.. I thought Cotto was fighting Martinez. Does he qualify?
Cotto is really on the decline...... Obviously I considered the Cotto fight..... I feel that the difference between what Cotto brings to the table and what Mayweather brings is a difference maker....
I'm suggesting that Martinez is vulnerable , not finished..... I think he has enough to get the job done vs Cotto....
Look, it's just conversation..... Something to do between fights..... Cotto is very respectable, but not the fighter he was a few years back....I just think Sergio will get past him.....
Why you ask???? Because Sergio is vulnerable, through no fault of his own.... He is injured and aging..... I think Sergio's injury is worse than he's letting us know..... He would downplay this if a Mayweather fight is on the line......
There is blood in the water and some shark is going to feast, why not Floyd????? He should consider the window of opportunity, before someone else beats him to the punch.....
I understand that Sergio is a risk, but he is also a opportunity..... And at this point, almost no one seems to realises this......

Sergio tried for quite some time to fight both Floyd and Manny and offered to drop as low as 150. Neither wanted anything to do with that matchup. Manny pretty much ignored the offer and when asked about it Floyd said Sergio was a great fight for Andre Direll.
As far as weight, the only one it would be a problem for would be Sergio as he's always offered both fights to be at 150 and he hasn't fought at 154 for quite some time. But, it was too dangerous a fight for either of them at the time. At this point, who knows, after so many injuries and years spent fighting bigger foes, it may have all begun to catch up with hI'm and he truly has become vulnerable to the point that his athleticism won't be enough to make up for his lack of technique.
Floyd is never fighting at 160 lbs. The only way this possibly happens is if Sergio puts on a crazy good performance in June, then wins against who ever he fights in the fall, and then he's done with HBO, and mayyyyybe it could happen at like 157-158 or something. I don't think Floyd is ever fighting above WW again though.
Didn't read. Floyd would never ever ever fight Martinez so why bother? Pointless.

Nothing crazy about it. Its the fight Mayweather should have been trying to make for May 3rd.
but serg finally has his big time PPV fight to get him some exposure, to casual fans.
edit: what im basically saying is fighting cotto is a good move to make the "possible" floyd fight even bigge
lol you never know, i know sergio would give in to all mayweathers demand and probably would even try to make 154. thats how bad he probably wants the fight.
he probably feels pissed off that hes just naturally bigger then pac, cotto, mayweather (even tho hes fighting cotto now). he always wanted those fights.
