We saw Alvarez's combination punching neutralized completely by movement from Mayweather and Trout. I just imagine Martinez hitting Alvarez with a straight left to his stomach while Alvarez is overdoing the head movement. Given Alvarez's stamina problems, I think a healthy Martinez knocks him out in the later rounds.
and martinez has a good chin.
i just find it ridiculous saying canelo has better defense then martinez.... yes we've seen more head movement lately but really canelo doesnt move his upper body too much. i dont think canelos defense is awful but not better then serg. serg on his game is moving around the ring and is hard to cut the ring off against. hes low to the ground and hides his upper body, hes hard to hit cleanly. and unlike floyd and trout, yeah he may not be as slick as them but he can make up for it with something none of them have, a big punch.
i dont want to compare canelo to chavez jr because i think canelo is much better then him, but chavez jr imo is bigger, stronger hits harder then canelo... trying to come forward and rough sergio up is a bad idea.
I think a Lara fight would tell us a lot about how Alvarez handles a powerful mover. Trout doesn't punch as hard as Lara and doesn't move as much. He does seem to handle pressure better than Lara, though.
I think he would beat martinez. His handspeed is comparable and his defense is miles ahead. Martinez is well past it now and gets hit a lot. The only thing martinez has thats big here is his stamina and that could affect canelo late.
I think Canelo beats:
martinez or cotto
sturm
Think he loses to GGG
i dont think his defense is miles ahead then maravilla lol.... what are the only two movers canelo faced in his career. floyd and trout and they give him big time problems. maravilla esp. healthy moves around the ring, and this guy punches HARD. i think a healthy and still good maravilla probably beats canelo. but he does have the great equalizer, a big punch and we've seen maravilla get hurt. but i'd take maravilla > canelo still
With his body type, how young he is, and how good he looked tonight I would go out on a limb and say yes, possibly even SMW as well down the line. He isn't very tall but the kid is wide, he will thicken up as he ages and move up and I think he can grab a belt or two.
yeah he could go 168 down the road. Hes only 23. Already big for 154. has plenty of time to do a 3rd weight class.

Looked good to me tonight, I'm not crowing him the undisputed 154 lb champ but he can definitely give anyone there a run for their money not named Floyd. He looked real good, very good combinations, his stamina looked better, he was moving good with his legs and his head and upper body.
This could happen sooner than later though, I imagine he will be gunning for the Martinez/Cotto winner and that will be Martinez. I think Martinez, even at his age with his injuries, could box this kids ears off. You never know though Canelo might get him out of there or just have the answer for his movement as well.

Quillin seems to take a large number of rest periods in his fights. The Ndam... and Guerrero... and Rosado fights all demonstrate this. But you're right that Quillin is also just not that good. His defense is poor, he relies on one big punch, he doesn't move well, and he has no inside game. If they keep Alvarez at 154, there will be enormous pressure to fight Lara. Plus it's probably getting extremely difficult for Alvarez to make the weight. Maybe they'll try to put Alvarez in with the likes of Demetrius Andrade or Carlos Molina. I can definitely see them putting Alvarez in with Cotto, regardless of what happens to Cotto against Martinez. I do feel that a move up to middleweight is inevitable for Alvarez. It will inject some more life into an already top notch division.
i was about to say this and mention that quillin isn't an elite MW. but really when u think of it, there are only the big two at 160. maravilla and GGG. everyone else is a step below... quillin,sturm,geale,murray,soliman... so really its not crazy to think canelo could be a "top middleweight" very soon
woah player slow the roll, i dont think quillin stamina is that bad. i just dont think quillin is that good. i also think they may try to keep canelo at 154. unless he actually fights the winner of cotto/martinez which would be orgasmic

If I recall, Alvarez was badly hurt by Jose Cotto. But since then, he's shown no signs of being hurt against bigger fighters.
What bigger fighters has he fought.. Trout isn't a power puncher, and angulo never really landed flush....
I think Canelo's chin is still an unknown, it really hasn't been tested yet
I agree. Quillin's stamina is terrible. Worse than Alvarez's by far. And Quillin isn't any bigger than Alvarez. They rehydrate to the same weight.

Would like to see how canelo handles quillens power if he gets tagged flush

alvarez islisted at 5'9" on boxrec http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=348759&cat=boxer
The guys is 5'7 (5'7 1/2 tops), that's the way he's been listed on all his showtime fights and he was shorter than Mayweather (5'8).
Boxrec is extremely inaccurate when it comes to height, its not the first time they get it wrong.

Quillen is a very active fighter either.. I can see canelo getting off first and scoring, and then dodging quillens jabs doing his little head movement trick

Quillin in particular is very stationary. And we saw against Rosado that he doesn't like pressure. Alvarez probably walks Quillin down and beats him up.

Quillen and sturm are beatable for canelo
Serg/cotto if they are shopworn. Canelo has a good chance vs either
Ggg is all wrong for canelo.. Would be an exciting fight but I think canelo would get outgunned

Canelo is still a work in progress, a product of aggressive marketing by GBP. He had no business being in the ring with Floyd, and would have lost the Trout fight if it weren't for the knockdown. His potential is undeniable but at this point in his career I'd favor Cotto or Martinez to beat him.
lol it was clear canelo was not losing that fight unless he was getting knocked out. too much money riding on canelo to have trout spoil the floyd fight. in my opinion he almost did in my eyes, but not "officially"
Alvarez has proven that he is very good against stationary targets. However, he has a lot of work to do against mobile targets. That's one of several reasons I favor Martinez over him.
