Gained respect for Canelo in this fight. He looked dominant, fast and in control. Although his volume of punches decreased as expected in the later rounds, it didn't look as bad as in other fights. I think i will no longer call him a bum after this fight. Stoppage seemed early, but Angulo did get battered for 10 rounds.
In the moment I thought it was a bit early but honestly, looking back, he was getting destroyed. he had lost every round and looked to be on the verge of taking a pounding in that round. So maybe it was a fraction early but I think if he hadn't stepped in the corner would have pulled him out at the end of the round anyway. (if he survived to the end of that round ... not convinced her would have)
the fight was pretty much over at that point he had nothing left, so did we really need to see the guy receive a beating for another minute or two (which I'm sure everybody can agree is what was coming. Canelo was really starting to tee off on him)
Weeks is a good ref imo.
Clearly Angulo was fine to continue, but the beating he took up to that point, and he had no chance of winning the fight, i think it was a good call. Obviously if the fight had been close it would have been a disgraceful stoppage, but that was not the case.
golden boy is going to have to find another yes man ref. weeks was supposed to replace cortez but its becoming too obvious that he's on the payroll. its so obvious the blatant favoritism he shows to a side fighters. tony you have to be more subtle!
Worst stoppage I've ever seen on a Pay-per-view main event.
The fans have paid too much money for a fight to be stopped when the other guy wasn't hurt or defenseless and has a reputation for being able to take a shot.
If I ever see that scumbag, I'm dropping his old ass.
Great stoppage, anyone who disagrees, doesn't understand the game. Angulo was toyed with, Canelo showed serious skills.
I think that's a strong statement.
Maybe the timing of the stoppage was strange, rather than the stoppage itself. I really can't see the point of letting someone go out for another round if you know you'll stop the fight as soon as he takes a single punch. Even Canelo was standing there saying 'what are you doing?'.
Add to that, I think Angulo was coming on a little bit in rounds 8 & 9, therefore it was strange. And too early IMO.
joe cortez just said : doctor was going to stop it but virgil asked for one more round, so doctor told hunter and referee another flush punch and stop the fight.... there you go...
I think it was a good stoppage. That guy is punch drunk. He wasn't gonna come on stronger cause Canelo looked like he was in cruise mode. Don't need to see him take 30 power shots a round for 3 rounds....too much damage.
Main problem with the stoppage was that it was arbitrary. Weeks not a doctor. Why stop it at that moment, rather than in any other the other rounds where Angullo was taking the same kind of punches.
And remember recently when he wouldn't stop the Ruslan-Alvarado fight unless Mike agreed? So why pull the rug out from Angullo right then when he was there, moving forward, and wanting to fight on?
I don't know, has Tony Weeks been vacationing in the UK recently?
It wasn't the upper cut that drew the stoppage. It was 10 rounds of utter punishment. Some people are so dense
Exactly, it was about the accumulation.
I have no problem with the stoppage but I would have been fine with the ref letting the fight continue. No problem either way.
Bad stoppage but I can understand why he stopped it. I mean Without a ko which I thought was possible due to Nelo gasing out, Angulo had no chance and even in the 10th Nelo punches had more pop. Also Angulo was taking way to much punishment
