He wouldnt be. I think Canelo has more upside than Vargas did and might even be a better boxer..so..before anyone mentions that...yeah. He definitely doesnt beat Floyd
I don't think he beats Lara it's a bad matchup but he does beat someone like Trout who despite being skilled with great size he just doesnt hit hard enough to keep Vargas out of mid range. He'd get tagged over that jab with brutal left hooks imo.
Outside of that there's what? Kirkland? Not enough skills to beat Vargas though it would be entertaining as hell for like... A round or two until Vargas lands huge bombs on Kirkland coming in and likely kos him. Failing a KL he'd outfight and out box him. You cant just bring strength and desire vs Vargas dudes not going anywhere unless you got a nuke of a left hook (ala Shane, Tito and Oscar who were all skilled and great).
Angulo despite losing to Kirkland I feel fare "better" vs Vargas but still loses.
Oh before i forget -puts on the anti hate flak jacket- he'd beat Cotto imo....
So basically he'd be among the top of his class but thats it.
Completely agree.
I'm just not sure if Vargas beats Canelo. Canelo I feel..skill wise is actually kind of underrated. Yes, it's weird because of how hyped he is but among boxing fans we discredit him for his hype that i feel we dont see how good he is.
I really think he has a much higher upside than Vargas (whom I feel despite his age peaked at an early age so people think he would be better).
I suppose some questions will be answered after we see him vs a big strong fighter in Angulo.
I dont think Vargas ever beats Shane. >__>... Its just so hard for me to unsee dat eye or ko. Plus, if you got yourself a good left hook upstairs you could count on landing it vs vargas. I think Vargas was the ultimate we wish he COULD have but he tried and couldnt he just didnt QUITE have that little extra skill or speed or power or what have you.
lmao this just screams of I have no clue WTF I'm talking about. So much wrong with this post. Classic.
we talking pre or post trinidad? pre tito would beat anybody at 54 except maybe floyd.
canelo is not the fighter vargas was. not even close.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This.....

Yeah bro, Vargas beats a prime Wright and Quartey but he losses to Canelo. GTFOH
His All Access and 24/7's would have been entertaining no doubt. Remember young prime El Gallo Negro from 'Blood In Blood Out?' That was Fernando. I remember when he was walking the aisle before he got in the ring to face Ross Thomson and you could lipread him saying "now we'll see motherf*cker." Would have been crazy to see Vargas get a showcase like 24/7. I saw many of his television interviews at the time and the kid had movie star charisma. Dynamic personality and a sharp wit.
He'd be a P4P elite in today's climate. No doubt there either.
A De La Hoya-Vargas 24-7 would have been Emmy award winning television.

the vargas that fought dlh was not the same guy that fought tito but he was still good. after that he completely fell off. he lost his chin. all of his speed. his punches had no snap to them. he was just a badly damaged fighter. at his best though he was a complete package. for some reason people think of him as a brawler but he was far for it. he was a very skilled boxer. his best wins came from boxing.
at the same age and half the fights as canelo, vargas was fighting winky wright, ike quartey and felix trinidad. think about that...
Idk about Lara but I can definitely say he would have beat trout no questions asked.
I gotta ask... Hopefully I'm not understanding this properly. Did you just compare the Shane that fought canelo to the Shane that fought vargas? I hope not. Vargas's back was gone by the time he fought Shane he was not in his prime. He should have gotten surgery but decided to go the other route which effed his career up. Vargas is wayyy better than canelo.
Agree to disagree with the Canelo-Vargas and lol. Of course Vargas beats the Canelo Shane. Vargas was no scrub and Shane was so far gone I dont ven know how he beat Cano...

Vargas would have absolutely destroyed Canelo, don't be ridiculous. Vargas literally does everything Canelo does better.
Vargas would beat all at 154 outside of Mayweather including Lara. Shame that his back went out the way it did

Vargas is much better than canelo.. He may not have beaten Floyd but he would be a lot more competitive.. Vargas would have destroyed guys like trout, hatton, Rhodes, old Shane...
