There will be 4 PPVs by early June. And at least two more when Pac and Floyd fight again.
Can't see this trend continuing. When Manny and Floyd retire PPV cards might slow down considerably, which would be great. A lot will depend on how the Cinnabon/Perro fight performs.
Yeah, some people are hard to please. The promoters are capable of putting together cards that appeal to everyone though. The format should be Elite Fighter/Entertainment/Mexican Fighter.
Kind of like the Mayweather vs. Canelo PPV. You had your elite fighter in Mayweather, your entertainment in Garcia vs. Matthysse, and your Mexican in Canelo. And that that 2.2 million PPVs, and it wasn't cheap.
There is certainly room for improvement on broadening the appeal of ppv cards, and that includes how they market the fighters because if you keep guys in a box they can only grow so much, so need to constantly be broadening fighters appeal if at all possible.
That is pretty much the winning format for PPV imo, it is good to have a ton of solo star power but casting a wider net is a good thing.
Exactly. I think a lot of people confuse the quality of a PPV overall with the quality of the fighters in the main event. Of course Canelo and Angulo aren't on the level of Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto, and Martinez, but I think the Canelo vs. Angulo PPV has a chance to be the best overall PPV of the first half of 2014.
Pretty much, it is easy to see why people view the Canelo-Angulo card as entertaining thus would be willing to pay. It is not the most meaningful fight (although it has some meaning) but a lot of fans just want to be entertained.
Plus there are other solid fights on the card.
Some people need to have it all though I guess~ prime entertainment, with top end fighters, and cheap
After the Floyd Canelo and manny Rios let down I'm really contemplating streaming it. But I've never done it and I know by forking over $70 I get great quality fo Sho!
But I really don't want to support shams il on the fence
we may be adding Golovkin vs Chavez Jr. ppv rumored for July 12th if Chavez can beat Vera.........
Its all good. If I'm not there live, then I'll be watching the PPV with my crew in front my big screen HD tv and loving it !!!
What were the 13 PPV cards HBO distributed in 2008?--I'm sure you know that it doesnt put on PPV cards, promoters do.
OK, there were 9, sorry, I was off a bit. I just remember getting an HBO PPV calendar that year and each month highlighted a big fight.
Courtesy of BadLeftH**k, here's boxing's 2008 PPVs with buys:
Roy Jones Jr. v. Felix Trinidad 01-19 HBO 500,000
Kelly Pavlik v. Jermain Taylor II 02-16 HBO 250,000
Juan Manuel Marquez v. Manny Pacquiao II 03-15 HBO 400,000
Manny Pacquiao v. David Diaz 06-28 HBO 200,000
Miguel Cotto v. Antonio Margarito 07-26 HBO 450,000
Juan Manuel Marquez v. Joel Casamayor 09-13 Golden Boy 100,000
Kelly Pavlik v. Bernard Hopkins 10-18 HBO 195,000
Joe Calzaghe v. Roy Jones Jr. 11-08 HBO 225,000
Oscar de la Hoya v. Manny Pacquiao 12-06 HBO 1,250,000
It was only up until about 4 years ago that boxing had 12-13 PPVs a year, each year, for several years. HBO had basically one a month, and occasionally two in a month, while Showtime did 1-2 a year.
So, yes, it can.
I don't remember seeing multiple PPVs in 2010. I haven't been a boxing fan forever, so I'm no expert, but I would like to see what years you are talking about?
Is that how much it is now? Damn!!
Dont have direct TV so dont know
Yea I just looked it up it is either 40 for 6 months for the base level or 55 for 6 for the max level if you want to watch games on all your devices.
I don't either, I only knew it was way more because my brother used to get it, he is a die hard Steeler fan and it became not worth it to him a couple years ago.
Just for the record Sunday Ticket is expensive as ****, it is like between 250 and 350 depending on what level you get

Unfortunatly yes boxing can sustain it. The most ridiculous thing in sports is paying 70 dollars for a boxing PPV. For 120-150 you can watch thousands of NBA games or hundreds of NFL games. For that price you are going to watch two Mayweather fights.
We already have to pay to watch boxing by having HBO and Showtime. If you think about it boxing is an expensive sport to be a fan of.

I love boxing, the wife loves boxing, and we can spend $100 at dinner easily so why not grab some beers, make some dinner at home and watch some sport.
I will buy all PPV!
White flag accepted.
LOL, your post was more of a white flag then mine cheapskate, you clearly don't understand how business or economics work.
Capital won't take a risk if the reward isn't there, and the main source of capital in the fight game is PPV.

I am saying you are a cheapskate because you think them making money is bad for business~
I am simplifying everything for the target~ and you can't counter that either or you would have tried, good try cheapskate~

The Fisher-Price explanation of boxing economy is adorable.
And how am I a cheapskate? Or are you just saying that because you can't maintain the discussion? You dont have to answer I already know.

24/7 is cheap programming for HBO they love that ****~
No they don't there won't be money to make things happen, unless guys are willing to take huge paycuts
It is good for the sport because it brings in money and capital which makes it worthwhile for people with real money to back boxing because there is a dollar to be made, that trickles down the whole sport because people want that pot of gold. That pot of gold no longer exists makes boxing less worthwhile for everyone involved.
People will keep shelling out if they want to buy, if they start losing money they should change. They are doing just fine, just because you are a cheapskate doesn't mean they should change their model for you.

I suggest doing a bit more research on this before you discuss it.
HBO doesnt want to spend a chunk of its budget to produce a 24/7 series for a PPV that it will get very little miles out of.
If "the biggest fights migrate down a level"... then cards will get stacked. You have already seen GB start to do this.
Free market capitalism? wow you are reaching. The result is more watered down cards and less premuim matchups. Now how is that good for the sport?
People are not going to keep shelling out 60-75 dollars for multiple PPV. Take a guess at why Broner v Maidana was moved to regular Showtime at the end of last year.

Ross Greenburg, then president of HBO Sports, had said his piece regarding PPVs.
"I can't tell you that pay-per-view helps the sport because it doesn't. It hurts the sport because it narrows our audience, but it's a fact of life. Every time we try to make an HBO World Championship Boxing fight, we're up against mythical pay-per-view numbers. HBO doesn't make a lot of money from pay-per-view. There's usually a cap on what we can make. But the promoters and fighters insist on pay-per-view because that's where their greatest profits lie."
I'm a Showtime subscriber, for example. Guess whether I prefer regular fights or not.
