Can't believe some of the responses...Pernell is a piece of **** and f-ing crackhead!!! If this was Mayweather you muthafuca's would've went full tilt. Kicks he's moms out and says it was a "Beautiful Thing" Really Pernell
Sounds like something the mom and freeloaders would say.
.
Off topic but this is why home ownership in this country is overrated! You can pay it off in full yet still never fully own it. The minute you dont pay that property tax out you go!
Some people feel that way. I'm not one of them. After about five years, with the tax write-offs (property taxes are themselves tax deductible) and no rent increases (unless you have an adjustable rate mortgage, the payment never goes up), you're already ahead of the average renter. You accrue equity with a home, while you never see one dime of the rent you pay ever again. Once your mortgage is paid off, you only have to worry about maintenance, insurance and property taxes, which are all less than the rent you would pay for a similar sized home.
There are other important financial benefits to owning your own home, but let me throw in a couple of real-world niceties. You own a house, you can do practically whatever you want with it. You can throw parties and get-togethers, but not worry about someone disturbing you. There's pride of ownership with a house. (Trust me, this shouldn't be underestimated.) Think about the difference between someone saying they rent their place and someone saying they own it.

It certainly doesn't look good, but Whitaker kept his mom in that house for thirty years. He can't be all bad. His six siblings obviously didn't give a damn. They could've gotten together and paid the required property taxes. How did it get this far?

The home would seem to be mortgage-free, since Whitaker bought it thirty years ago, but the taxes never go away. It's sad and strange that Pernell should feel the need to evict his own mother. It appears he no longer has the means to support his mother or the house he bought her. I don't understand why they couldn't just talk this out. It's as if she simply refused to go. In either case, she would've been forced to vacate, as the government would've eventually seized the property for non-payment of taxes. As distasteful as it all looks, Whitaker probably did the right thing.

Is that for a single family home? If so, that's beyond cheap.
I'm familiar with property taxes in four states. For the purposes of illustration, we'll use a $300k home as an example. In Williamson and Travis counties in Texas, you would be paying over six thousand a year. In central Florida (Orange, Osceola, etc.), you would be paying about four. In New York (Sufflok, Nassau, Westchester, Putnam, etc.), you would be paying between seven and eight. And in Las Vegas, Nevada (Clark county) you would be paying about four.
A retired NFL player in the family means nothing. Some of the highest paid athletes in the game wound up broke, let alone an unknown player.
That is very, very, very cheap! Unbelievably cheap actually. Because on the east coast (NY, NJ, MA, etc) or west coast (CA), no way are you going to pay that kind of cheap tax. No way jose. A $150K crib, you're going to pay $4K, 5k, 6k, if not more.
I used to live in a crib that was worth $230K or so, and the property tax on that was near $10K. And that was a few years ago. Now, it's probably like $12, 13K :lol1:
Yeah it was like 560 this year. Single family. And Ive put improvements into the place so its probably worth more now seeing as I havent had it appraised since I bought it and I bought the house when the housing market was at a low.
Besides all that.. its a moral issue for me. Id sooner own only the clothes on my back than renege on a gift to my family. Maybe that's just me.
It's difficult to comment on without seeing the whole picture. Generally speaking if you own a home, but someone is living there, it can be a greater liability. You don't want someone staying in a building and not maintaining it, and or incurring other costs.
whitaker is the only pro boxer ive met that was totally rude to me. hes a piece of crap in my view and this only cements it for me
Taxes arent high in the 7 cities. I used to live there. I am a homeowner in huntsville, a comparable area.. my tax is 560 a year on a 150k house.
There is also a retired nfl player in that family. Taxes werent the problem.. coke is.
but I can see you are determined to defend this.

Please don't think that way. A house is an asset by it's very nature. Everyone should strive to own their own home. If you choose not to keep up with your responsibilities, then you are making it a liability. There's maintenance, property taxes and homeowner's insurance, but you get much more than renting in the long run.
It's a liability to me because it's a guaranteed infinite expense. And I say this because after the expensive mortgage is paid off, the property tax is forever. Whether or not it's better than renting is depends, based on so many things. Some not even of your own control.
I like real estate in other countries, where once you buy the home, it's yours. There's no property tax and other fees forever haunting you. Only thing you have to do, or not do, is keep up with maintenance.
Pea has bad personal demons so this isn't terribly surprising. This is very sad though, not going to rag on him just going to wish him and his others the best.

It's another example of how a house tends to be a nonstop liability rather than an asset. Property tax is a motherf*cker.

that's the problem with taking handouts
at any time, your benefactor can call you on it
what Whitaker does with shit he owns is nobody's business but his
just sucks seeing great fighters end up in situations like this
The article says Zillow.com (a real estate website) estimates the value of the house to be over $370,000. I can tell you from experience that Zillow tends to undervalue; and, in today's market, the house would likely sell for at least that much. Now, I know nothing about property tax rates in Virginia, but I find it extremely hard to believe that a house valued at nearly 400k incurs only one grand a year in taxes. In Florida, for instance, a house at that price would set you back about 4-5 thousand a year in taxes alone, depending on the county.
In very few families can one can expect some regular financial help from relatives, let alone 4-5 grand a year. Mrs. Whitaker might only get about $500 a month from social security, which is barely enough to eat. It would appear that Pernell's mom was living mortgage-free for thirty years. Now her son has hit hard times and the gravy train is over.
What gets me about all this, is how did it have to come to an eviction proceeding? It seems that Whitaker's mom just didn't want to leave. It's crazy, because with unpaid taxes, the state will simply seize the property and evict her themselves...all while Pernell loses the house he paid for. It may sound fucked up that Whitaker took his mom to court (and it is), but it looks to me that he was left little choice.

It's pure conjecture, but I would not doubt for a second that Pernell's relatives, including his mother, were leaching off of him for years. In fact, I would be willing to make a good-sized bet on it.
The lady lived in the house for free for thirty years. (The house should now be free-and-clear, since your typical home loan is exactly that long.) Now that all that's required is to simply pay the yearly taxes, none of Pernell's six siblings can get together and pay their mom's bills? Clearly, the only winner in that family is "Sweet Pea."
It's another example of how a house tends to be a nonstop liability rather than an asset. Property tax is a motherf*cker.
