Vasyl might become a great champion with multiple belts someday... He's got awesome amateur credentials.... But does that justify a World Title shot in only his second "Official" pro fight ??? His window of opportunity should be open for years to come, should he competently make the transition to the pro game... What's the rush ???
I'm not talking about the potential commercial viability that might result from a victory over Orlando Salido.... I'm not talking about his promotion and marketing teams...
I'm asking why does Lomachenko deserve to get to the front of the line, for this Title Shot, before everyone else ??? Can this be remotely justified on a basis of merit ???
Yes he had two Gold medals and one of the best amateur records ever. He got a KO in his first fight and he has some of the fastest hands I've ever seen. Future face of boxing right here
:boxing:
He beat a ranked wbo contender so yes. This is a legit voluntary title defense for Salido.
That makes him eligible for the fight.... There might be dozens of Fighters also in that position....
It is refreshing to see a boxer bypassing the easy road.... The fight will add spice to the sport.... I'm looking forward to the match.... If he wins, expect him to be called out immediately, by many.... We will be in for a entertaining adventure with this guy...
But getting this title shot in his second fight is like a (Pick a sport Baseball, Football, Basketball, Hockey, Soccer and so on.) hyped call up from a major sport, going to the All Star game after only one week in the big leagues....
He might be talented enough, but is not deserving yet....
Is he fighting for a world title? Or is it an alphabetti spaghetti title which is basically an interim world title?
I say the former. I have no problem with it.
He saw a chance to shoot for the stars, Arum and Salido saw a chance to make a buck or two. Makes sense all round
well he did beat the wbo international champ (pretty easily too)...so doesn't that kind of put him into the position for a shot at the wbo world champ?
I guess I have a progressive point of view on this topic. I have zero issues with the dude getting a title shot. IMO he's going to beat the brakes off of Salido to prove he's worthy of the shot. Mind you Salido himself doesn't deserve to be where he is because he's a drug cheat. But I digress... Did Lebron James need to go to Duke before he took over the NBA? Did he have to toil in the D League or behind a mediocre Vet on the Cavs? The answer there is no. And it's the same here.
I agree. And its not like he beat some no name pro with a a 2-14 record. He beat a very live opponent, coming off a good win against Rey Bautista, and he toyed with him, outclassed him, and knocked him out in entertaining fashion.
This guy is like Rigo, he was ready the second he turned pro. Only difference is Lomachenko is a lot more entertaining.
I have been asking this same question for week.s Sure hd did great things in the olympics and prior to becoming pro, but there is absolutely no justification, zero, for getting right to the front of the line for a title shot in his seceond pro fight.
Well put it this way. Lomo won the WBO continental belt from the guy who had possession of it. If Lomo did not fight the guy he beat (Jose Ramirez), that guy could have gotten a shot at Salido instead.

Does anybody remember who Salido fought after he beat Juanma for his title?
^
This. It's not like Salido's previous challengers were super deserving so I don't know what everyone's big problem is with this fight.
not at all. this is the pro ranks, amateur credentials should count for something but he should still have to pay his dues as a pro before fighting for a title. i thought rigo got it too quick tbh and he still beat a couple of solid contenders before going for a belt, this is insanity.
not saying he cant win it, i think he will but thats besides the point. he hasnt earned the opportunity yet. i hope he wins but gets beaten up or dropped along the way. he needs that learning experience in order to fulfill his potential and the way he is being rushed he needs it asap.
No he doesn't and its terrible that HBO is letting this happen. This illustrates why titles are so cheapened and how promoters like Arum have compromised the integrity of the sport.
fuck it, trial by fire
no guy with 1 pro fight deserves a title fight
but somebody gets what's coming to them in this one
if Salido loses, he didn't deserve to have the title
if Loma loses, he learns a lesson about rushing his pro career
Well actually he won some Jr WBO "title" on his first pro fight. Some intercontinental thing. It is just a strap. Who here views Salido as the champ? Nobody.
Salido is a tough probably top 5 contender of his division. So if Lomo wants to accelerate his career by fighting a top 30 fighter then go to a top 5, all the power to him. It is kind of refreshing in a way. Most fighters with financial backing get pampered. You cannot say he is taking the easy route.
