After I beat Cotto by knockout, I'll begin to concentrate in what could be a fight with Golovkin. He's a very difficult rival, if not the most difficult. Not because of his technique, but because of his physical strength. He's strong enough to take and absorb punches. This is the moment to fight him. In a few years, he'll have more experience and he'll be even more dangerous.

I like Cotto but I just can't envision him winning. Sergio is just too good and too big. Props to Cotto if he wins or even if it's close (heck, if he doesn't get KO'd I'll be impressed)
If Cotto hangs with a relatively healthy Martinez, that would be a tremendous accomplishment all its own. I think Sergio's coming back healthy and with a vengeance for this fight. He really seems to want to hurt Cotto.

Yeah, but I don't think Martinez will need to move as urgently or as much as normal. Cotto is short, short-armed, not particularly fast, and fighting in too heavy a weight division.
I think this is a mismatch really.
It's a good tuneup for Martinez to see how his knee his, shake off the ring rust, and make a nice payday.
IMO, Martinez beats the poop out of Cotto (assuming he's rehabilitated). If the knee is an issue then Martinez will have difficulty, his asset is the constant movement.
The fight with Cotto should tell us how Martinez's mobility and conditioning are, unless he just stands in the pocket and knocks Cotto out in one or two rounds.

This will be a very good fight. I might be looking forward to this fight more than any other.
The problem is a fight against Cotto is unlikely to tell us how much further Martinez has faded. Even a fat 43-year-old Martinez will look good against Cotto. We may leave the fight with the false impression that Martinez has a lot left to challenge Golovkin with when it isn't the case.
What an opponent for a 40-year-old to be bowing out to - brutal really.

None of that is happening.
He's not KO'ing Cotto and I doubt he beats him. And he also won't be fighting GGG.

Martinez has been one of my favorite fighters through the years but sadly i agree with this. I think his age and injuries won't let him be the boxer he once was. Cotto by UD. And then cotto gets destroyed and retired by golovkin.

good at least hes not trying to pull a mayweather on golovkin.
Aren't ya excited for the beatings he Will put on Cotto maybe Canelo and GGG?
:beerchug:
I'm very excited to see him come back. I hope he wins so we can see that showdown :boxing:
I seem to remember a statement from a month or so back that Maravilla was gonna be back in the Gym 'in a few weeks' or so - but nothing firmer than that.
I'm not sure, but I seem to recall Sergio ain't a really big guy for sparring, perferring to concentrate on conditioning, endurance and speed work. I would imagine there's some room for this to overlap with the physiotherapy required for his injuries anyway. Depending on the type of injury, non load bearing exercises (such as swimming or cycling) could serve both purposes.
I would really hope he is properly recovered (9 months is enough for all but the most severe injuries) and has planned his return date to make sure he also has time for a full camp after complete recovery. After all, exacerbating an incompletely healed injury either in training or in the Cotto fight would presumably end his career.
I'll be honest: I think that Martinez is cashing out with this Cotto fight... Martinez looks to frail in order to take another tough fight (such as the fight against Golovkin)... I hope I'm wrong, but the "hope" is the last one that dies (as they say)...
Did anybody see Martinez in a boxing gym lately?
(I just keep on asking this.)
He said he's only been training for a few days because he's knee isn't completely healed in the article.
But he's been in the gym.
